PDK Director: Airport Considering New Solar Farm Project

Mike Van Wie told the American Association of Airport Executives on Sunday that the airport is considering the project for an unnamed piece of property.

DeKalb Peachtree Airport is considering building a solar farm as Georgia airports look to develop new revenue streams in a recovering economy, the airport's director said this week.  Mike Van Wie didn't offer any additional details during a Sunday discussion at the American Association of Airport Executives' annual conference in Reno, Nev., according to a Monday report in Aviation News Today. The session was dedicated to the creative ways airports are diversifying by developing new businesses. From the News Today story: Mike Van Wie, A.A.E., director of DeKalb Peachtree Airport (Ga.), said his airport's non-aeronautical ventures include a storage facility, auto sales lot, and a DeKalb county sanitation transfer site. The sanitation site is…

I wish Mr. Van Wie Luck. I don't know if the Airport has a special dispensation but County Buildings (actually ANY Government buildings) are forbidden from using solar power by the Territorial Act. It would be odd if the nice people at the Southern Company had overlooked the use of large tracts of Government land for solar generation when ensuring their total monopoly status in the Territorial …   more ›

New T-Hangars to be Built at PDK Airport

The $8.2 million project will generate $500,000 a year for DeKalb County.

DeKalb County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for a new T-Hanger investment at DeKalb Peachtree Airport, the second busiest in Georgia. The event will take place (rain or shine) at 2000 Airport Road, Atlanta, at 10 a.m. To commemorate the occasion, the Civil Air Patrol will make its last flight on that runway. In June 2010, the county's Revenue Enhancement Commission was launched by CEO Burrell Ellis and the board of commissioners as a joint initiative in response to the global economic downturn. Among the commission’s top priorities was the construction of additional private hangars at DeKalb Peachtree Airport.  Additional private hangars create the opportunity for additional property tax revenues, additional sales tax revenues…

Cephora Lounge, PDK On Tuesday's Commission Agenda

Several other Brookhaven and Chamblee related items are up for discussion tonight.

Several Brookhaven and Chamblee items are on Tuesday night's DeKalb Board of Commissioners agenda. The owners of Cephora Lounge, at 3679 Clairmont Road, are seeking a special-use permit for a late-night establishment that will operate until 4:00 am. Also on the agenda is the issue of greenspace around Peachtree-DeKalb Airport. DeKalb County is seeking to amend the land-use plan for property around the airport to allow for future light-industrial and office uses. The property that the county wants to develop is located on the east side of Clairmont Road; the north and south sides of West Hardee Avenue; the north and south sides of Young Road; the north and south sides of Bragg Street; and the west side of the airport. Several local …

Until the county gets in the game and makes it clear that we aren't going to tolerate late-night establishments around neighborhoods, we'll have to be on guard and keep swatting these applications down. Nothing good happens in this city after midnight.   more ›

It's A Bird, It's A Plane, No... Actually, It's A Plane

DeKalb Peachtree Airport is hosting the 2012 Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow this weekend.

DeKalb Peachtree Airport is hosting the 2012 Good Neighbor Day Open House Airshow as a way, I suppose, of entertaining the masses while being good neighbors to people who live under their flight paths. But judging by the PDF above it certainly looks to be pretty cool. A lot of interesting names on it. Circus Maximus sounds awesome. I would be fairly surprised if the Larry King scheduled to attend is, in fact, the Larry King. If it is, I'll be doubly surprised if it turns out he's capable of flying a trick plane. The great thing, though: Admission is free, boys and girls. Five bucks for parking. No biggie. Go have fun.

Playing at the Airport

A little known secret in Chamblee and Brookhaven is that the Dekalb Peachtree Airport has a playground where families can play and watch airplanes take off.

Children's laughter and screams of joy are not what you would expect to find at an airport. Nestled in Chamblee off of Clairmont Rd., Dekalb Peachtree Airport is breaking that mold. Years ago the airport installed a playground off of the main runway so families could come, hang out and have fun while watching planes and helicopters take off and land.

Got a Hot Tip?
