Will the Bulldogs start 2013 with a win?
The Georgia Bulldogs hit Orlando on Wednesday to begin prepping in earnest for their New Year's Day Capital One Bowl matchup against the Big Ten's Nebraska. Coming off a heartbreaking SEC championship loss in which a few yards made the difference between playing for the national title and being passed over for a BCS berth, the Dawgs are looking to close out the 2012 season on a triumphant note. Some analysts think that's likely. For the Bulldogs, the hype about a possible national championship has begun.
Georgia's Athletic Director Greg McGarity might have been prescient when he asserted earlier this season that Georgia Tech, and not Florida, is really the Bulldogs' biggest rival. Who would have predicted a month ago that so much would ride on this weekend's in-state matchup? Georgia survived the easier of its back-to-back triple-option challenges by defeating Georgia Southern last week. Now the Bulldogs, suddenly catapulted to No. 3 in the BCS standings, must withstand a visit from Georgia Tech before turning their attention to the SEC Championship game, likely against No. 2 Alabama. Adams visited Brookhaven in September 2011.
Eight months ago, an upbeat University of Georgia president Michael Adams touted all the accomplishments of UGA to the Brookhaven Rotary, including the university's new engineering program and admitting the school's largest incoming freshman class. Today's address was quite the opposite. Adams, who has been president of the school since 1997, made an emotional announcement that he would be leaving the university in 2013. In what was described as brief remarks, Athens Patch quoted Adams as saying that there were a whole host of reasons for his departure, but that he felt it was the right time.
