School Make-Up Days Are Feb. 18 and Feb. 21

The school board approved the dates at a called meeting Thursday.

It's official: No President's Day holiday for DeKalb county schools. The school board on Thursday approved Feb. 18 and Feb. 21 as make-up days for instructional time lost because of snow earlier this month. Feb. 18 had been scheduled as a teacher's work day, and Feb. 21 is the President's Day holiday.  All public school students in the metro Atlanta area missed a whole week of classes from Jan. 10-14 after several inches of snow and then ice made roads treacherous.  The board's decision was posted on the DeKalb County School System's website.

Ice and sleet still cover Brookhaven roads

Drivers negotiate black ice, slush, and snow to beat cabin fever and to return to work.

Brookhaven residents were out Wednesday - driving, walking and marveling at the third day of ice and snow  - an event that ranks itself as one of the worst snow storms in Metro Atlanta history. While some enjoyed the days off and the rare opportunity to play in the snow in their neighborhoods, others struggled through the icy roads to make their way to work. While some progress to remove dangerous ice has been made on major thoroughfares and interstates, Georgia Department of Transportation still urged residents to stay off the roads unless it was absolutely necessary to travel.  Thick tracks of ice can grab vehicle tires and cause drivers to fight with the steering wheel, as City Dog Market employee Alexis O'Connell found out today. "It …

Brookhaven businesses brave the weather

A few businesses are open today in Brookhaven, despite dangerous icy roads and snow.

As Brookhaven roadways remain crusted with ice and sleet making driving anywhere dangerous, a few businesses like Solar Dimension Tanning, Cook’s Warehouse and Carolyn’s of Buckhead ignored the weather warnings and turned on their “open for business signs” in hopes of attracting even the sparsest of customers – and in one case - just to get out of the house. Amber Adams and her fiancé Glenn Harbin, 31, owner of Brookhaven medical diagnostic business Body Metrics, set up their wedding registry at Cook’s Warehouse and Sherlock’s Wine Merchant. They were bundled up in their winter gear as they sipped hot coffee - still chilly from braving the freezing weather to drive to the Brookhaven Station shopping center. When asked why his store is open…

I can certainly relate to the risk taking spirit that refuses to be imprisoned by ice and snow. Kudos to all who chose to go to work, no matter what.   more ›

Video: Snow Diary Part 2

My snow adventure in Brookhaven

If I told you about my day, you wouldn't believe it. Luckily, there's video footage of some of my experiences to prove it. I started out in Embry Hills on my way to Brookhaven thinking I might take a MARTA bus to the Chamblee Station, then hop on the rail line to Brookhaven/Oglethorpe Station. Since the Chamblee Station is only one stop away,  it should only take a few minutes, right? Wrong. At the same time I was trotting up to the bus station, MARTA had already issued a release that said, "Based on a thorough assessment of road conditions, MARTA has cancelled all bus service for Monday, January 10, 2011.  Bus service will be temporarily suspended for Tuesday until conditions improve enough to allow vehicles back onto the streets." MARTA …
