Here's How to Recycle Your Electronics

DeKalb County operates two recycling locations for electronic waste.

The DeKalb County Sanitation Division, in conjunction with Keep DeKalb Beautiful and Atlanta Recycling Solutions, has reached a milestone in its ongoing green initiatives. To date, the county has prevented more than one million pounds of recyclable electronic scrap from entering the landfill.  The U.S. EPA encourages recycling of “e-scrap” or electronic scrap as a means to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and incinerators. Electronic scrap contains toxic materials such as mercury, lithium ion rechargeable batteries, lead or cadmium. These materials cause harm to the environment if they are mismanaged or disposed of in improperly lined landfills. Furthermore, electronic scrap should not be considered “waste” in the sense that …

Sign Recycling Extended Through This Weekend

Brookhaven's sign recycling effort has been so successful, the collection trailer will remain on Caldwell Road through the weekend.

The effort to collect old campaign yard signs for recycling has been so successful that the recycling trailer off Caldwell Road will remain there until Monday, Dec. 17, the day that Brookhaven becomes an officially operating city. Mayor J. Max Davis told Patch on Thursday afternoon that "ABC Polymers today emptied several hundred signs and has returned an empty trailer ready for more retired campaign signs." The trailer is parked at 2524 Caldwell Road, owned by Michael Thomas Properties. The drop off area is adjacent to Pizza Rock Brookhaven, which is under construction and will be opening soon.  "This is open to all Brookhaven residents for plastic yard signs and stands from any candidate or organization," Davis said. More Than 1,000 Yard Signs Dropped Off For Recycling ... So Far

The trailer in Brookhaven Village will remain through Wednesday of this week.

More than 1,000 campaign signs have been dropped off so far for recycling in Brookhaven Village. "I'd like to see us can get a few hundred more," Mayor-elect J. Max Davis said. "They don't even need to be campaign signs, just plastic." A recycling trailer, courtesy of Michael Thomas of Michael Thomas Properties and Jeremy Daniels of ABC Polymers, is parked at 2524 Caldwell Road. The Perimeter Center landscaped medians were littered with yellow plastic signs for the BiPlane ride business, maybe somebody can remove those illegally place signs and bring them to this great recycling effort. As to the BiPlane company they should be ashamed of themselves.   more ›

Marist Holds Recycling Event This Week

Marist School is hosting an Electronics Recycling Drive from November 12-18 in honor of America Recycles Day, November 15.

Marist Students' "So Fresh and So Green" Video wins Green Cup Challenge

Recycling never sounded so cool.

Four seniors at Marist School in Brookhaven recorded this award-winning video touting their Go Green message and proclaiming their love for saving energy. The video was released as part of Green School Alliance's Green Cup Challenge. Set to the tune of Atlanta's own Outkast's 2001 hit, "So Fresh, So Clean," the group raps and dances while offer recycling tips and encouraging the listener to save the environment.

Marist School Paint Recycling Event a Huge Success

The school is considering hosting another Paint Recycling Day in Spring.

Marist School received and reconstituted more than 2,400 gallons of paint recently at its community-wide paint recycling event on Sept. 24. Organized by the Terra Project and Environment Club, the two-hour event was considered a huge success. From the paint collected, Williams Paint Recycling will be able to reconstitute more than 2,000 gallons, saving the paint from being discarded in landfills or hazardous waste facilities. Because of the success of this event, Marist School is considering hosting another Paint Recycling Day in the Spring.
