Oglethorpe University has chosen Rebecca “Becky” Hall as director of athletics. Hall is the assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator at Wittenberg University and will become Oglethorpe University’s fourth director of athletics since reassigning to NCAA Division III in 1990. Hall will replace Jay Gardiner who has served as director since 2004. The Oglethrope University men's golf team showed why they carried the No. 2 ranking in the nation this weekend by dusting the field to win their 10th SCAC Men's Golf Championship at the Tunica Resorts in Mississippi. The Petrels led wire-to-wire to take the hardware for the fourth time in five years and earn their 14th trip to the NCAA Championships. Junior Eric Quinn won medalist honors and the SCAC Golfer-of-the-Year distinction by shooting 3-under par for the event to win by 7 strokes. Freshman Anthony Maccaglia finished tied for 6th at 8-over par to earn both First Team All-Conference and Freshman of the Year honors. The Georgia Basketball Coaches Association (GABCA) announced the 2011-12 All-State Award recipients on Wednesday and Oglethorpe senior center Andrew Steioff highlighted a group of five Petrels to receive recognition. Steioff earned GABCA All-State First Team honors after enjoying a breakout senior season in which he led the Petrels in both scoring and rebounding and was one of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's (SCAC) most consistent performers. He was the SCAC's 5th leading scorer at 14.4 points per game and checked in at 5th place as well in rebounding with 7.4 boards per game. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has released their individual player rankings following the fall season and Oglethorpe sophomore Caffrey Francis is ranked No. 23 in the Atlantic South Region. Francis showed well at the Fall ITA event to earn her regional ranking. Held on the campus of Emory University, Francis claimed her opening round match over Centre's Lauren Dever, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. She then advanced in another three-setter by topping Sewanee's Julia Wood, 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 before running out of gas against Emory's Lauren Pinsky, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5. The men's soccer historic 2011 season came to an end on Thursday night in Tyler, Texas as host the University of Texas at Tyler topped Oglethorpe 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA's. The Patriots netted two first half goals, the second with only 20 seconds remaining in the half, to establish the margin they needed en route to the win. The two sides spent the early stages of the contest methodically testing one another out with the ball mostly staying in the midfield section. The game loosened up a bit as the players settled in and Tyler began asserting themselves from the 10 minute mark throughout the rest of the half. Senior goalie Jon Beaver of Knoxville, Tenn. has been named the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Monday September 26 through Sunday, Oct. 3. Beaver was a hero in goal for the Petrels this past weekend, stopping two penalty kicks in a 3-1 Friday win and posting a shutout in Sunday's 4-0 victory. Beaver, who battled a rib injury all week in practice, came in cold as the substitute goalkeeper when starter Frank Petersen received a red card and immediately stopped a penalty kick. Less than five minutes later Beaver was called upon again facing his second penalty kick and again came up huge with the save in a 3-1 conference opener win against Austin College. Oglethorpe senior right-handed pitcher Sam Briend of Cumming, Georgia has signed a pro baseball contract to compete in baseball's New York State League (NYSL) this summer. The New York State League is a developmental league for the Canadian-American Independent League. It features a 42 game season from June 20th to July 15th with a spring training from June 13 to the 17th. The NYSL has placed over 200 players onto professional teams since 2007. Briend led the Stormy Petrel staff with 11 starts and 63 strikeouts in 2011. He compiled a 2-4 overall record to go along with an ERA of 6.08. He tossed 8 innings of 4-hit ball to record Oglethorpe's only complete game of the season in a narrow 2-1 loss at LaGrange on February 16. This information …

The Oglethorpe University athletics department announced Thursay afternoon the hiring of Lee Ann Tutchton as the school's first ever head women’s lacrosse coach, effective immediately. Tutchton, according to the athletic department, will spend 2011-12 recruiting and scheduling to build a program ready for play in the spring of 2013. Tutchton brings a wealth of lacrosse experience to the Stormy Petrels’ staff. She starred in college at James Madison University in both women’s lacrosse and field hockey before moving to Georgia to begin her coaching career. As women’s lacrosse began to spread in the South in the late 1980’s, Tutchton started the first under-11 girl’s lacrosse team in the state. Most recently, Tutchton has served as the …

The Oglethorpe University athletics department announced Wednesday the hiring of Tom Higgins as head men’s lacrosse coach, effective immediately. Higgins served as the associate head coach to Jay Gardiner during the Stormy Petrels first ever season in 2010-11 and assumes the head position as Gardiner returns full-time to his post as Athletic Director. Higgins brings coaching and playing experience from all levels of lacrosse to the Stormy Petrels’ program. He played in high school for lacrosse powerhouse Farmingdale on Long Island, N.Y. before taking his talents to the college level at Division I Delaware.
