What would a "City of DeKalb" be like? It would not be as affluent as DeKalb County or most of the current cities in DeKalb, according to a story in CrossRoads News. The story told about a report from the Carl Vinson Institute (CVI) at the University of Georgia. CVI’s demographer Matt Hauer showed that the median household income for the county as a whole is $51,349, while the median income for unincorporated DeKalb is $36,000. Of the county’s 11 current cities, five – Avondale Estates, Decatur, Dunwoody, Brookhaven and Atlanta – are at or above the county level. Some people want to create a city out of DeKalb County's unincorporated land.
State senators from DeKalb County will meet this week to talk about possibly forming a "City of DeKalb." The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Nov. 29 in room 450 at the State Capitol, CrossroadNews.com reported. A City of DeKalb has been talked about for decades but the idea has gained new urgency because more cities are forming in DeKalb County, like Brookhaven. Some lawmakers are discussing the idea of a City of DeKalb that would be created out of all the unincorporated areas of DeKalb County. State Sen. Gloria Butler, D-Stone Mountain, will chair a Senate study committee on the incorporation of the city of DeKalb, according to Neighbor Newspapers.
