'The Dark Knight Rises' is a Masterpiece

Now showing at CineBistro in Town Brookhaven, our Patch reviewer says, this is simply an amazing movie.

Christian Bale plays Bruce Wayne again. His fortune is dwindling; his body is battered and his alter ego continues to elude police in "The Dark Knight Rises." This is a tough movie to review because I don't want to spoil anything. So I will try keep my review spoil-free. Basically, Batman is forced out of retirement after a new bad guy emerges from the sewer, a thug by the name of Bane (played by Tom Hardy). When he shows up, Gotham is overrun by anarchy. The supporting actors are fantastic in this film. Commissioner Gordon is again played by Gary Oldman; Marion Cotillard plays a philanthropist; Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a cop; and Anne Hathaway digs her claws into the role of Catwoman. You will laugh, you will cry, and there is a good …

QUESTION OF THE DAY

CinéBistro to Allow Children; Is it a Good Idea?

The in-theater dinning experience started as an establishment for patrons over 21, but not anymore.

When CinéBistro opened in Town Brookhaven last September, the restaurant/movie theater served only patrons over 21 years old. Starting this Friday, May 4, however, the theater will welcome patrons under the age of 21 to enjoy movies before 6 p.m. CinéBistro Executive Director Fred Meyers said because the theater received positive feedback from patrons under 21 for limited showings, the in-theater dining experience will be available to a younger audience.  “CinéBistro will maintain our 21 and older policy for shows after 6 p.m., continuing to offer our refined cinema experience to adult audiences only," Meyers said. Should CinéBistro have changed its policy if even for shows before 6 p.m.? How do you feel about potentially sharing the …

'The Lucky One' Has Plenty of Heart

Teen heartthrob Zac Efron breaks out in his first real adult role as a war veteran who has come home looking for love in a romantic melodrama that is worth the price of admission.

Zac Efron plays Logan, an Afghanistan war veteran on his third tour, who comes across a picture of a woman who inspires him to search for her, stateside, in The Lucky One. His search lands him at a kennel in Louisiana owned by Beth (Taylor Schilling) and her grandmother, Ellie (Blythe Danner). He gets a job there and, over a period of time, settles in, still not telling anyone his real reason for being there. As you might imagine, sparks start to fly. The Lucky One is a Nicholas Sparks movie. He's good at this kind of thing, writing books turned into movies like Message in a Bottle, Nights in Rodanthe and The Notebook. This film, in my opinion, is one of his better stories. And, with an attractive young cast, it should be very appealing to…

Dinner and a Movie

New Movie 'John Carter' a Sci-Fi Bonanza

A Civil War veteran gets roped into an intergalactic war that he wants no part of. This film is part 'Avatar,' 'Star Wars,' with a whole lot of 'Cowboys and Aliens.'

Taylor Kitsch (from "Friday Night Lights") plays a Civil War veteran who finds himself on Mars caught up in all sorts of interplanetary fighting in "John Carter." The original story was penned by Edgar Rice Burroughs 100 years ago. Now it's a 3D epic, from the folks who brought us "WALL-E," and is bigger than life. John Carter is a small man compared to the 12-foot-tall, four-armed creatures around him, but he does have his own superpowers while on the Martian planet. If you haven't read the book, there is a lot to keep track of here. Carter wants to go home -- An alien species wants him to marry their queen. Another alien is smitten with him. Another group wants him to save their people. Toss in some shape shifters and, well, it's kind of…

'Breaking Dawn' All Bark and a Little Bite

The latest Twilight film features the most anticipated wedding in years (minus, of course, the one with Will and Kate -- and that Kardashian mess).

It has been three years since the first movie and the wait is finally over for fans of "The Twilight Saga." Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) tie the knot at last in the highly anticipated "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1." The film is the fourth in a supernatural soap opera franchise that has already raked in nearly $2 billion worldwide. If you are one of the only people on the planet who do not know about this series, here is all you need to know: Vampire Edward Cullen and human Bella Swan (who happens to be a virgin) are getting married and their werewolf friend Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) is not very happy about it. There are really no spoilers here. Your teenage daughter can tell you exactly what happens. …
