Today, members of the Georgia House of Representatives, by a vote of 101 to 57, adopted HB 636, which would allow for a referendum on the proposed city of Brookhaven/Ashford. I commend the members of the DeKalb County House Delegation, led by Chairman Howard Mosby, who spoke out on behalf of all DeKalb County citizens by opposing this legislation which bypasses the local legislative process. I am not against cityhood, because I believe citizens have a fundamental right of self-governance. I am, however, against an unfair process which disenfranchises DeKalb County voters and allows the cherry picking of the choicest commercial districts and neighborhood amenities by cityhood advocates. Burrell Ellis, Jr., Chief Executive Officer From: Commissioner Elaine Boyer Date: July 11, 2011 Subject: Police Services – Special Tax District There aren’t enough words for me to express my disappointment and astonishment at your mid-year budget proposal for DeKalb County. There are many reasons ranging from estimated revenue to expenditures. But what I would specifically like to address in this letter today zeroes in on the most critical role of county government --- public safety. You have utterly failed to abide by legislation adopted by the General Assembly this year to separate out the levy for DeKalb Police Services in a Special Tax District – a fund designated to protect the most vital service this county provides its …
