The new city of Brookhaven will hold an open house next week at its temporary city offices, where staff will be on hand to answer questions on community development and finance. The open house will run from 2-3:30 pm on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013. The city's temporary offices are located at 200 Ashford Center North. The city also has announced a town hall meeting set for Thursday, Jan. 24, at Marist School, 3790 Ashford Dunwoody Road. The event is designed to introduce the new city's mayor, city council and department heads. “This town hall will be a time for us to engage with our residents. We want this to be an open informational forum,” said Mayor J. Max Davis, “and we hope everyone will attend.”

Susan Hiott becomes the new city's first clerk in its history.
Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis has appointed Susan D. Hiott as the new city's first Clerk. Hiott comes to Brookhaven from Smyrna, where she served as city clerk for the past 10 years. Hiott also has worked for the cities of Roswell and Acworth as city clerk. She has more than 25 years of experience in governmental and educational administration. Hiott holds a MBA from Kennesaw State University with a concentration in information systems management along with a bachelor’s of science in business administration with a minor in English from North Carolina Wesleyan College (Rocky Mount, N.C.). Many of the ordinances being adopted by the city council are simple measures to bring the new city's laws in line with DeKalb's.
The Brookhaven City Council has adopted numerous ordinances over the past few weeks, but most of them have been measures simply to bring new city's laws in line with DeKalb County's existing laws. That includes an ordinance coming before the council on Tuesday night, that relates to adult-oriented businesses within the city limits. "Our new ordinance will mostly mirror what DeKalb already has in place, which is a ban on establishments that offer alcohol and nude dancing," said Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis. "But it will also have our own wording and language, and will be a stronger and more fair ordinance that what DeKalb has in place." The city council's first 2013 meeting will be on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 7 pm.
The Brookhaven City Council has released its 2013 meeting schedule. The council's first meeting of the new year will be next Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 7 pm. All of the meetings will be held at 7 pm, but locations have not yet been determined. The council will also hold two public hearings in January to consider the new city's zoning ordinance and sign regulations ordinance. The first public hearing will be held at the "Little White House" at 2536 Caldwell Road at 7 pm on Monday, Jan. 14.
