Briarwood Pool Closed For Maintenance

The facility will be closed through the weekend.

Patch received word of some issues with the pool at Briarwood Rec Center late Thursday afternoon and evening. My wife and son attempted to visit the pool late Thursday afternoon, and were told by personnel there were some water leaks in the restroom facilities. Later, we received an e-mail from our friends in the Drew Valley Civic Association that Commissioner Kathie Gannon's office said there is a safety problem with the pool equipment, and emergency repairs have been scheduled for Friday through the weekend.

We were there Sunday when the break happened. Water was spewing out of the outside walls about 2 feet above the entrance sidewalk outside. Once inside I noticed the bathrooms had about 4-6 inches of water on the floor. My concern is that the county will take 2-3 weeks to fix this and if the election results come in for a YES Tuesday night, any county work will stop immediately. The pool will shut…   more ›

Briarwood Park Meeting Set For Monday Night

The meeting begins at 6 pm to discuss some planned improvements to the facility.

A long-awaited meeting between DeKalb officials and the community is set for tonight to discuss improvements to the Briarwood Park Recreation Center. The meeting, arranged by DeKalb Commissioner Jeff Rader, begins at 6 pm. For the past several months, the county has released recommendations and plans for improvements to the facility, but with few of them actually being implemented. Recently, Brookhaven residents have been urging the county to move forward with a series of long-planned improvements to the center. In an e-mail, Rader's office said Park Pride and county officials would be attending. The correspondence also said the agenda "will be to discuss where we are with park improvements and to develop the Friends of Briarwood Park …

Wanna Help Clean Up Briarwood Park?

DeKalb County could use a few more hands today.

We've been doing a lot of reporting on Briarwood Park the past few weeks, from the center's expanded pool hours to neighborhood efforts to revitalize the facility. Well, we got an e-mail late yesterday afternoon that 30 DeKalb County personnel from the parks, sanitation, and roads & drainage have set a major workday for today (Saturday, June 16.) Crews "will clear invasive plants and low hanging limbs from trees between the road and playground to provide line of sight for safety," according to the email forward to us by Jim Eyre of the Ashford Park Civic Association. If anyone is interested in helping out, we're sure the DeKalb crews can always use volunteer labor. Volunteers should check in with Supervisor Alan.

Briarwood Pool Set To Open While Renovation Talks Continue

The pool is also featuring expanded hours over the summer.

While the Briarwood Park Recreation Center swimming pool readies for opening this Saturday with expanded hours of operation, a group of homeowners continue to push for renovations to the facility. "All we're trying to do is generate enough interest both in the community and among county officials that Briarwood Park is a diamond in the rough," said Drew Valley resident Robert Turner. "And we just want to eliminate the 'rough.' This could be a really neat place." Turner, along with homeowners in Brookhaven Fields and Ashford Park, has been meeting and holding discussions with DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis' office; District 2 Commissioner Jeff Rader; and the DeKalb Parks Recreation Department about renovating and revitalizing the facility. "We …

Briarwood Recreation Center to Get Facelift

Bidding on the project starts Monday, Jan. 9

Relocation of the playground, replacement of the doors and flooring in the lobby, and an update to the handicap ramp are among upgrades that will be part of a new phase of renovations at Briarwood Recreation Center. "We’re giving the old center a facelift," said Ravonda Moody, project manager for DeKalb County Park Planning and Development. "We’re not fixing every single thing, but you’re going to walk in and feel some newness." Additionally, Moody said, the Briarwood Recreation Center Renovation Project will include the following upgrades:  "I’m very excited," said DeKalb County Commissioner Kathie Gannon. The community room has been on the agenda for a long time. The playground has been one of the other big issues that parents were …
