New Brookhaven Summer Baseball Team Starts Play in June

The Brookhaven Bucks is Atlanta Sunbelt Baseball League's newest team

Brookhaven is poised to join Atlanta's college baseball scene - the summer league scene, that is. The Brookhaven Bucks - the only summer league team inside the Perimeter - is Atlanta Sunbelt Baseball League's newest team. The Sunbelt League is a five-year-old organization with nine teams throughout Metro Atlanta. It is one of the many summer season college baseball leagues nationwide. Cambridge Park resident and team owner John Davis, a Brookhaven realtor for Bravo Realty Consulting, said he is looking forward to an exciting season of college baseball right here in Brookhaven. "I think it's a good fit for the Brookhaven community where baseball is hugely popular. I think it'll be a good activity," Davis said. "It's going to be a good place…

Familiar Territory: Marist Returns to Baseball Final Four With Sweep Over Greenbrier

Defending state champion War Eagles get solid performance on the mound in quarterfinals win, face Loganville in the next round

From Staff Reports Marist starting pitchers Blake Stevens and Brandon Liebrandt posted back-to-back stellar outings on the mound to lead the defending state champion War Eagles (29-3) to a sweep over Greenbrier (21-10) in the quarterfinals of the Class AAAA baseball playoffs Tuesday. The War Eagles won Game 1, 6-1, and wrapped up the sweep with a 10-1 rout to advance to the Final Four for the third consecutive year. Stevens struck out eight to earn the win in Game 1. Liebrandt was just as impressive, fanning 10 batters in Game 2. David Bourbonnais closed out the first game with a scoreless performance in the seventh inning. Jack Southers pitched the final inning in Game 2. In Game 1, the War Eagles slowly pulled away from Greenbrier by …

Oglethorpe Baseball Player Ends Career in University's Record Books

Center fielder Brendan Pilger ends his college career as the program's leader in home run, stolen bases and doubles.

When Oglethorpe’s centerfielder Brendan Pilger hit his first home run as a high school player, the sophomore got a valuable lesson that he would carry with him into his record-setting college baseball career at the Brookhaven university. A check-swing hit barely cleared a short fence and Pilger’s coach stopped him as he rounded third base with a message: “Get your money’s worth.” Later the coach would explain why he shared the advice with the young Pilger even after a homerun result. The coach at Atlanta’s St. Pius X Catholic High School reminded the player that he has one swing to make contact and put the ball in play, so don’t cheat yourself. “You don’t want to give half effort because after that half effort you might not get the outcome…

Chamblee Falls 10-3 to Dunwoody

After first loss in region play, Chamblee High School's baseball team next faces Lakeside

Starting pitching proved to be Chamblee's undoing on the diamond as the Bulldogs gave up four runs in the first inning en route to a 10-3 loss at Region 6-AAAA rival Dunwoody, Wednesday. This lastest defeat drops Chamblee to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in league play. “I give Dunwoody a lot of credit,” said Bulldogs coach Brian Ely. “They hit the ball hard in the first inning and put us in a hole. We tried to climb back in the game but just didn’t have enough tonight.”  The Wildcats' four-run first inning came on three hits, including an RBI double by Stelen Stulberger and a well-executed sacrifice bunt by Zach Tonner. Chamblee’s starting pitcher Stephen Gaulden settled down in the second inning, and the Bulldogs cut the deficit to 5-2 after three…
