Friends of Ashford Park Holding Saturday Work Day

The park cleanup day begins at 9 am.

The Friends of Ashford Park group is holding a park cleanup day from 9 am to noon on Saturday, March 2. District 2 city councilman Jim Eyre said, "The cleanup will help get the park ready for increased use as the weather warms this spring. We will be cleaning up leaves, picking up trash, cleaning the portable toys, cleaning the beds and, hopefully, spreading pine straw around the trees at the playground. "Please bring rakes, blowers, gloves, clippers and other hand tools you may feel appropriate for this work."

Brookhaven: Countdown To Dec. 17

What Would You Like To See In Ashford Park?

A Patch series asking you, what would you like to see in our city's parks.

Brookhaven becomes a city at 12:01 am on Dec. 17, and one of the responsibilities our new municipality will be undertaking is maintenance of local parks. A couple of weeks ago, a loyal reader suggested this idea to us: Patch could serve as a source of information for our soon-to-be-elected mayor and city council if we asked residents, what would they like to see in our city parks? So, for the next eight working days (Monday through Friday, Aug. 20-29), Patch will be running a series of articles asking you: what would you to see in a specific park? Maybe slides or play areas, or more picnic tables, perhaps. What about swings, monkey bars, or baseball fields? Or maybe better lighting or safer parking areas. First on the list is Ashford …

PPS: Although winning was important. We learned it was never all-important and, instead, learned to be more interested in a 'fair' game; which meant even no bench-warmers. So: Knowin who were the really good players and the really lousy players, for any game, we'd divide the players so both teams would have equal players of both really good players and really lousy players. For ex: I could never …   more ›

Test Scores Are in for Brookhaven Schools

The state has released CRCT scores. Here is how three Brookhaven schools fared.

Results are in for the CRCT, and while some scores are high at Brookhaven schools, there is also room for improvement.  CRCT stands for Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, which measure how well students in grades 3 through 8 acquire skills and knowledge in key subject areas, such as reading, math and social studies. The assessments are used to determine individual student strengths and weaknesses, as well as the overall quality of education in Georgia.    The results just released from the state include scores from third, fourth and fifth grades at Dresden, Woodward and Ashford Park elementary schools.  Across the board, scores were high in reading at the three schools. At least 73 percent of students across all grades met or exceeded…

Savi Urban Market Tops Agenda at Ashford Park Meeting Thursday

Meeting will be held in the Ashford Park recreation building.

The Ashford Park Civic Association will meet Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. at the recreation building in Ashford Park located at 2980 Redding Road (corner of Redding Road and Caldwell Road with parking/entrance off Caldwell). The agenda for the meeting will begin with a presentation by representatives from Savi Market to provide information regarding the store's development and solicit comments from the community with respect to the planned expansion plans, followed by a discussion of options that may be available to provide additional security in the Ashford Park neighborhood.   For those attendees from the 'greater' Brookhaven area who may only be interested in the Savi expansion plans, issues specific to Ashford Park will be discussed …

QUESTION OF THE DAY

Do You Feel Safe in Your Neighborhood?

A smattering of burglaries in Drew Valley and Ashford Park leave some neighbors feeling they need to do more.

According to crimemapping.com, approximately 14 crimes, including one violent crime was reported in the 30319 zip code from Feb. 16 through Feb. 22. A rash of burglaries in Drew Valley last month, and more recently Ashford Park, has residents thinking about surveilance, increased police presence and beefing up neighborhood watch groups. Do you feel safe in your home and in your community? Tell us in the comments section below.

We feel safe now as we have excellent coverage by DCPD and they are very responsive when needed. Should the area become a city? Not so much as we do now. Visit Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Chamblee, Johns Creek and any other small city you can think of, the emphasis is on “fund raising”. Anyone ever heard of Pine Lake? Pine Lake is well known for their speed traps in years past; they always needed …   more ›

Notice Anything Different? Ashford Park Gets Branded

Ashford Park signs adorn the top of more than two dozen street signs in the Brookhaven Neighborhood.

If you've noticed a little something extra on top of the street signs in Ashford Park, it's because the civic association has installed street signs toppers. DeKalb County gave the association the green light in October 2011 to install more than two dozen toppers at the 25 entries into Ashford Park along Peachtree Road, Dresden Drive and Clairmont Drive. The sign toppers were estimated to cost around $2,000 and were installed as a way to brand the community, said Ashford Park Civic Association Vice President Jim Eyre.

Q&A: The New Apartment Community on Dresden Drive

Although the new apartment community planned for Ashford Park is still in early development, Hines Senior Vice President Kurt Hartman shared some early project details with Brookhaven Patch's editor.

This week, Brookhaven Patch reported that Hines, the Houston-based real estate development company, would make Ashford Park the place where it would build its first Atlanta-based apartment community. We caught up with Kurt Hartman - a Hines senior vice president who manages construction projects in Atlanta, the Carolinas and Tennessee - to answer questions about the new Hines Project in our Q & A below.   SA: There have been conflicting reports that the new development will be at the corner of Peachtree Road and Dresden Drive or Dresden and Apple Valley Road. Please clarify where exactly the new apartment community will be located. KH: The location is Dresden between Ellijay and Fernwood, caddy-corner from the Kaleidoscope restaurant. SA…

With all the apartments we already have in Brookhaven, I don't see the need for this many new units, but surely the Hines project won't get approved at that density anyway. I just hope the property entrance isn't on Dresden - traffic is bad enough right there now.   more ›

Reader Poll: Should the New Hines Development Include Commercial Businesses

Patch wants to know your thoughts!

Hines real estate development corporation revealed its plans to build a more than 200-unit apartment complex in Brookhaven Fields along Dresden Drive. Some residents here said while they welcome the development, they would like to see commercial and real estate included in the plans. What are your thoughts? Take our poll.   Correction: The complex will be built in Brookhaven Fields, not Ashford Park like previously report. We apologize for the error.
