“We are excited to have the opportunity to improve pedestrian access and work to make Brookhaven more walkable,” Mayor J. Max Davis said in the press release. “We were able to add these improvements to our neighborhoods without adding any additional funding to the budget.”

Weather permitting, the sidewalk construction will start after Thanksgiving, continuing through early next year.

The city will also plans to pave five streets by the end of the month:

The public works department created this list following an assessment of road conditions. About $200,000 of DeKalb HOST money will fund the paving, while $1.8 million of HOST money has been set aside for paving in the proposed 2014 budget. More locations will be selected next year.

An additional $1 million that includes a $500,000 grant is recommended for sidewalks in the proposed 2014 budget.
