Oglethorpe Wins Ninth SCAC Men’s Golf Championship

This year's win marked the Petrel's 13th trip to the NCAA Championship.

The Oglethorpe University men's golf team clinched their ninth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship by pulling away from the field in Sunday's final round at the Horseshoe Bay Resorts in Horseshoe Bay, Texas. The Stormy Petrels posted the low round of the day (309) to finish 29 strokes clear of second place Centre and secure the program's 13th trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Playing on a brutally tough Ram Rock Course, senior Craig Stevenson led the way for Oglethorpe by posting a three-day total of 234 (+21) to come home in second place individually. He was one of four Petrels to record top-10 finishes as Patrick Cansfield (+30) came home 6th, Eric Quinn (+32) took 7th and Jordan Hall (+33) tied for 8th. Anthony Amodeo, the only Petrel not in the Top-10, would have been in that group had he not been disqualified for mistakenly turning in the wrong scorecard after round one. Amodeo finished rounds two and three with successive 76's, the best final two-day score for the Petrels.

With the huge victory, Oglethorpe, ranked No. 9 in the most recent Nike / Golf World Coaches Poll, clinches their 13th berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 2011 NCAA Championship will take place in Greensboro, N.C. May 10-13.
