Oglethopre Baseball Player Earns All-South Region Third Team Status

Matt Cornwell received the honor following a stellar season.

The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced their postseason award winners and Oglethorpe shortstop and pitcher Matt Cornwell of Boca Raton, Fla. has been selected as a 2011 All-South Region Third Team member following his outstanding senior season.

Earlier this spring, Cornwell received his second consecutive All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference selection. After earning a nod as a pitcher in 2010, Cornwell was honored as a shortstop in 2011 to become the first player in Oglethorpe history to do so at two different positions.

He batted .345 on the year with a .412 on-base percentage, all the while playing excellent defense at shortstop. His 43 runs scored this season were tied for 8th in the SCAC. He finished in the Top 10 in school history in triples and stolen bases, and goes down second in assists. In addition, he has performed very well as the team's closer this year, recording a 3.77 ERA and five saves. The five saves are tied for second in the league this year, and will put him in the Top 10 in Oglethorpe history in that category, as well.
