Marist, Loganville Split Doubleheader in Class AAAA Final Four

Teams return to the diamond Tuesday for series-clinching Game 3; trip to state championship

For the first time in the 2011 playoffs, the No. 1 seeded will suit up for a Game 3.

Marist and fellow No. 1 seed Loganville split wins in Monday's Class AAAA Final Four series with the Red Devils taking the opener 8-2. Loganville’s victory snapped a six-game winning streak for Marist. With the season on the line, the War Eagles bounced back in Game 2, clinching a 4-3 triumph in eight innings.

After taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, Loganville blew the game open with a three-run fifth that included a two-run homer by Heath Holder to increase the lead to 5-1.

Kenny Anderson pitched a complete game for the Red Devils, while Holder and Clint Frazier each homered twice. Daniel Spingola and Mitchell Anderson homered for Marist.

Game 2 went down to the wire, as Marist pulled out a 4-3 extra-innings win to extend the series.

Kevin Gale scored the winning run after Jack Mohan was walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. The War Eagles had sent the game to extra innings by tying the score in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Chesny Young.

The hosts led 2-0 after one inning after Anthony Sherlag and Kevin Gale had RBI singles. But Loganville took the lead after scoring one in the fifth and getting a two-run homer from Chance Bridges in the sixth.

David Bourbonnais was credited with the Game 2 win after pitching a scoreless eighth.

The teams return to the diamond on Tuesday for the rubber game of the series at Marist with the winner hosting the state finals.
