Former Marist Soccer Player Drafted to Seattle Reign FC

Former Marist School soccer player Kristen Meier was chosen in the inaugural draft of the National Women’s Soccer League to join the Seattle Reign FC. Meier is the first female soccer player from Marist to be drafted to a professional team.

The 21-year-old will join a new Seattle franchise with a roster that includes U.S. Women’s National Team players Hope Solo, Megan Rapinoe, and Amy Rodriguez.

While at Marist, Meier lettered in varsity soccer for four years and played on the 2008 Region III East Premier League and Georgia 4A Championship-winning teams. She was selected as the Georgia Soccer Coaches Association’s player of the year in 2008. Meier also lettered in softball and basketball, serving as the girls’ basketball team captain for the 2008-2009 season.

As a student at Wake Forest University, Meier spent time as a forward, midfielder, and defender. In 2011, she was chosen for the Wake Forest Nike Challenge All-Tournament Team and became the first of the school’s women’s soccer team to be chosen for the NCAA All-Tournament Team.

“Kristen was one of the most creative, talented, hard-working, passionate, bright, and team-oriented players I have ever coached. I knew then that the potential for greatness was there,” said Sergio Stadler, Meier’s soccer coach at Marist School. “We are all very proud of Kristen's accomplishments, and we wish her the best of luck as she begins a new life journey.”

Meier will graduate from Wake Forest in May 2013 with a degree in mathematical economics.
