Club Sport Provides Fun and Excitment in Brookhaven

Local residents compete in host of activities at Boys & Girls Club

With the onset of the spring season, many Brookhaven residents are once again participating in their favorite athletic activities offered by Club Sport leagues throughout the city.

Club Sport, which has been around since 1992, is one of the most successful recreation leagues in the city. They currently have 270 teams playing five different sports - softball, flag football, soccer, basketball and volleyball. Local residents involved with Club Sport participate at the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club, located at 1330 North Druid Hills Road. Other venues include Peachtree Hills Park in Buckhead and Mercer in Atlanta with games played throughout the week.

“We’ve been around since 1992 and we do it right,” said Priscilla McDowell, assistant director of Club Sport. “We have well-run leagues, the games start on time, and the fields are in the best shape possible.”

Among the games played at the Brookhaven Boys & Girls Club are basketball, volleyball and softball. Club Sport is currently registering teams for golf and later this month will have team cornhole available for competition as well. Cornhole is a lawn game in which players take turns throwing cornhole bags at a raised platform with a hole at the end. Matches are broken down into innings. Tossing a corn bag in the hole is worth three points, while one on the platform scores one point. Play continues until someone reaches the score of 21.

There are currently more than 5,000 people participating in Club Sports leagues. All the leagues have a regular season and always include a postseason. All teams make the playoffs, which are usually single elimination. The champion in the postseason doesn’t just get bragging rights; they also receive a gift card one of the league’s sponsor bars - Mellow Mushroom, Hudson Grille and Cheyenne Grille.

“It’s a good opportunity for the winner to celebrate their victory with their teammates,” McDowell said.

Although spring play is currently in session and registration is closed, summer leagues are right around the corner. This summer they’ll be offering softball, flag football, basketball, volleyball, and team golf. Registration for summer leagues begin in May and play starts in June.
