UGA President Michael Adams to Step Down in 2013

Adams visited Brookhaven in September 2011.

Eight months ago, an upbeat University of Georgia president Michael Adams all the to the Brookhaven Rotary, including the university's new engineering program and admitting the school's largest incoming freshman class.

Today's address was quite the opposite.

Adams, who has been president of the school since 1997, made an emotional announcement that he would be leaving the university in 2013.

In what was described as brief remarks, as saying that there were a whole host of reasons for his departure, but that he felt it was the right time.

Some of those at Thursday's announcement wondered whether the support Adams and UGA enjoyed while Sonny Perdue was governor would continue with the current governor and Board of Regents.

While beloved by students and staff, Adams, who according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is the highest paid president in the university system, has had his share of turbulent political trials.

Politics, particularly the new governor and the change with the Board of Regents has speculators wondering whether this influenced Adams decision to step down.
