UGA President Promotes Public Education in Brookhaven

Michael Adams said 88 percent of University of Georgia's students are Georgia residents.

University of Georgia President Michael Adams told a crowd of more than 50 Brookhaven Rotary members and guests Wednesday about the significance public education has on the Georgia's sustainabilty, growth and quality of life.

Adams touted the university's new engineering program and noted that this year the school admitted its largest incoming freshman class with more than 5,000 students. He said of those students, more than half were in the top 10 percent of their classes with grade point averages that hovered around 3.8 on a 4.0 scale.

He maintained that despite being short 600 employees and the school's need to cut $140 million from its budget over the last few years due to a strained economy, UGA remains one of the best public universities in the country.
