Parent Voting 'No' On Cityhood; Endorses T-SPLOST

The outgoing Brookhaven state lawmaker says the proposed new city's financial success is 'highly questionable.'

Outgoing state Rep. Elena Parent is voting 'no' on the issue of Brookhaven incorporation.

In an e-mail to her constituents this past weekend, Parent said "the financial success of the new city is highly questionable. There are no tax savings, and in fact there will be a tax increase, if the city is created."

Parent also endorsed the .

"Our region has underinvested in transportation infrastructure for decades, and it is an impediment to creating jobs and a threat to our quality of life," she said.

Parent was drawn into the same House District as as a result of census-driven, legislative redistricting. , and instead has been named executive director of Georgia Watch.

"There is a tight millage cap, tying the hands of any future Brookhaven city leaders from making decisions and undermining the financial viability of the proposed city," Parent said in her email. "The number of police officers budgeted for is inadequate and more can't be added because the financial projections show no operating surplus."

Regarding , Parent said, "A 'yes' vote will provide billions of dollars in investment to improve our failing system, including historic investments in mass transit for our neighborhoods.

"The project list was passed unanimously by a regional roundtable and it is supported by leaders of every political stripe and from every corner of our region," she said. "If the vote fails, it will be even more difficult in the future to achieve the kind of cooperation that is essential if Atlanta is going to thrive, or even function."

In the email, Parent also endorsed these candidates:

  • Judge Dax Lopez for State Court Judge
  • Marshall Orson for DeKalb County School Board District 2
  • for re-election as DeKalb County Commissioner Super District 6
  • Oretha Brown-Johnson for DeKalb Clerk of Superior Court

"Jordan, DeKalb broke FEDERAL election law. "---Roger That While, as the Feds know, still untold US voter registration forms are being provided, and used by, the MxGov right here within the bounds of the proposed new city? I hope so.

Two points: #1 the North Precinct has been ordered by the DeKalb Democrat bureacracy to beef up numbers and "be seen" in Brookhaven for the past couple of months to try to fool residents, after the vote we go back to the way it has always been. #2 Before the last few months the county had way fewer officers patrolling our area than they indicated, the new city will easily be able to provide more within the budget. This nonsense is typical of the NOCity Dekalb Democrat bureaucracy and how they "play politics 101" Intelligent Brookhaven voters will not be deceived.

Dean , A city means alot less police and diminished police service capabilities. A city means alot more politicians. Both of your points are simply rumor among the yes group.

Re the sidewalks. I assume I haven't formed an opinion has to its application citywide. Not sure if that's what you meant by extend. So I think leaving it as your original wording may be best. There is also the idea of complete streets that Dunwoody adopted. But details like that are probably best to hash out with candidates and the people involved in the various committees

"... townships and boroughs and those cities are still operating and providing great services to their citizens..."----Hank Quinn First, a "township" is not a "city." You had said you visited while in "High School" "a long time ago." Even then, but being a High School-er, you would have missed it. After all, who would tell you? The property taxes ultimately provide such "great services" to drive, especially but not only, the elderly to either sell out at distress prices or eat cat food. Recall watching television commercials there? Grandma practically purring in all the "cat food" commercials with "all the nutrients"?

What was your take-a-way from that two minute J. Max Davis spot on WSB? He appears to be a man obsessed with a sign . . . Go watch the video, how trite for someone wanting to create a new city! https://www.onlinefilefolder.com/2s55xD25VvTtU6 J. Max Davis is a man living in a fine neighborhood with their own swim club on a beautiful private lake. Really, it is a very nice area and it is not some place where you pay your 50¢ and you swim. Paying the going rate for membership in his club I seriously doubt he would ever visit one of DeKalb County’s parks with a pool. Yet, he did today for this WSB-TV news piece. And, he is clueless as to what is going on with Briarwood Park. He has absolutely no idea what those folks in Drew Valley and Brookhaven Fields are in the initial stages of planning for this park and clearly has no clue as to any of the recent renovations in the park performed by DeKalb County. Really, is this all he had? Brookhaven Yes’s J. Max Davis, a potential candidate for mayor, has absolutely no clue what is going on in Briarwood Park. He wants a new city? Please . . . Quick! Give me a Cheerwine and a special hamburger with extra yellow mustard!

Neither does Chuck Konas who publicly described Briarwood Park as 'nice,' at Oglethorpe University. The crowd laughed at him, poor guy. You know it's true, because I saw you there.

Hey Hamburger, "He has absolutely no idea what those folks in Drew Valley and Brookhaven Fields are in the initial stages of planning for this park and clearly has no clue as to any of the recent renovations in the park performed by DeKalb County." What about the plan that was put into place close to 10 years ago to tear down the ball fields at Briarwood Park and give them to a developer to put in town homes - then the county would take the land the developer had purchased from the daycare on the corner and turn it in to a "Great Playground"? Last time I drove by (this morning on my way to vote YES) I saw the same empty lot on the corner, the same townhomes that were built on the ball fields and ... oh yeah, the new sign that the county put up to make me think they were actually going to do something. Personally I think they have taken the money that they paid for the sign and the time to have the parks employees put it up to clear a place for the people that ride the buses to stand on the north side of Peachtree so that they dont have to stand in knee high weeds or bushes that are overgrown so they have to step out in to the road to see if the bus is coming.
Eric H July 31, 2012 at 05:13 PM
Jen, which corner is that property at? If Brookhaven happens, that's something that can finally happen.
Eric H July 31, 2012 at 05:51 PM
Who knows who Hamburger is. At the end of the day, I'll quickly forget about all this. I've enjoyed the ability to discuss issues. Though I've also been annoyed by the inability to discuss issue because of anonymous posters who use their anonymity to be disruptive of any rational discussion. It is unfortunate, and those disruptive anonymous posters fall in the yes and the no camp. But I do agree Hamburger is unique. Clearly its an insider of the NO group. And while I appreciate the Patch and Mr. Darnell for their work in providing this forum I think their one failing is allowing anonymous posters like Hamburger to launch personal attacks on those who have been posting under full names or readily identifiable first names. Because that just scares others off who might wish to post legitimately.
Jen July 31, 2012 at 11:00 PM
Eric, The lot at Briarwood Way and Briarwood Road used to be a day care and a house. when they tore down the two buildings a devloper made a deal with the county to build townhomes where the ball fields were in exchange for the corner lot that had been purchased. The county was supposed to move the play ground to the corner lot and then replace the ball fields. Instead there is an empty corner lot with a sign that says Dekalb Parks.....
don Gabacho August 02, 2012 at 12:30 AM
"And what happens to Brookhaven when it is further walled off from the rest of Dekalb by the Chamblee Annexation?" Already predicted months ago: Chamblee is annexted to Brookhaven (and there's BYessers police) followed by Doraville, etc, followed by Brookhaven petitioning Cobb County to be annexed to Cobb County and accepted. Don't worry. You'll get your "diversity office" for the MxGov's Instituto de Mexico at Brookhaven Plaza.
