Murray Requests Moratorium On New Development

The Brookhaven mayoral candidate is concerned about billboards and adult entertainment businesses moving into the city during its transitional period.

Brookhaven mayoral candidate Sandy Murray sent a letter to the DeKalb County Commission on Friday, asking the county to place a short-term moratorium on permits and rezonings until the new city is up and running.

“My concern is that a small number of businesses may try to take advantage of the city’s startup and the transition process from DeKalb County to the city of Brookhaven," Murray told Patch.

Murray faces J. Max Davis next Tuesday in a runoff to become Brookhaven's first mayor.

Her request for a moratorium includes applications for all new permits, re-zonings, variances, SLUPs, and other approvals under Community Development Department purview that may affect the new city.

Brookhaven begins formal operations as a new city on Dec. 17, 2012.

In her letter, Murray said she believes “our new city needs time to get our city’s planning, zoning and community development set up and operational before any new developments begin.”

Murray said she was especially concerned about “enterprising businesses” that may try to build new billboards or open adult establishments in Brookhaven during the transition.

Murray was not specific when asked if she knew about any such businesses trying to move into the city, but said in an email, "I have worked to oppose the electronic billboard on Peachtree in the past and I'm aware of other billboard sites that require our vigilance."

"I have reached out to several of the commissioners and expressed my concern about the potential for new billboards to be put up or adult establishments to open without citizen input," she said.

"I am confident that the commissioners will listen to us and take the appropriate actions as we have requested."

I bet if J.Max came out saying the same thing folks would be tripping over themselves saying what a smart thing to do for the citizens of Brookhaven. Quite a double standard at play here.
Brookhaven4u December 01, 2012 at 03:16 AM
Maybe we should look at our true finances before we go chasing off "certain businesses." Our revenues may not be what some would promise. Our expenses, especially with the many pay to play obligations our Mayor has, might be a tad higher then expected? Profitable businesses that assist or tax base might not be something we want to chase away? Should we start a pool and we can all pick the %increase that pay 4 play has on our city?

Why do people make such rude comments about Sandy Murray?
"E Pluribus Unum" December 01, 2012 at 04:53 PM
Martha, a very important question you ask. I see your question also in a broader context of why men make such rude and crude comments about women in general. In my opinion I can give you a single word answer. Misogyny...the hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women only because they are women.
Booyah December 01, 2012 at 05:57 PM
They make rude comments because they are rude people. Hamburglar is made of 'pink slime' and the rest can hide behind poison pen names. I switched to a pseudonym because these folks actually scare me.

E you are wrong, for look at who dist. 1 county position, she is far better then the "man" in Dist. 2,look at who is in Dist. 7,is better then the person in /dist.6,also if Sandy wanted to help clean up Ashford Park Percent, she can STOP Stop ,please Stop placing signs on land that the owner DID NOT given ok and REMOVE her signs from the untold number of phone poles in the Ashford Park Percent,The one good thing for Ashford Park Percent if she is elected, that is WE those who voted against her will be WITHOUT a voice in the running of the city, the Same way we are WITHOUT a voice in the running of the County.
patrick December 01, 2012 at 10:16 PM
If J MAX DAVIS is elected Ashford Park Percent WILL HAVE One voice, I guess one out of four is not bad,
Eddie E. December 01, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Patrick, Still haven't gotten used to spell check have we. Anyway, as I asked Kathy on Thursday, where are those offensive signs? They certainly are not anywhere in Ashford Park, as I think I have driven down every street looking for them and nada! I realize it is hard for you to make any substantive charges against our next Mayor so you just have to make stuff up!
Eddie E. December 01, 2012 at 11:45 PM
Ashford Park spoke CLEARLY on our Council representative, therefore WE HAVE A VOICE!
Booyah December 02, 2012 at 12:17 AM
I guess I'm missing something here. Every district has one vote. The mayor only votes in the case of a tie.
patrick December 02, 2012 at 12:57 AM
Eddie you you 100 percent correct, that is he follow EVERY idea that the ONE year elected Dist.2 member,if i have another idea,I am out of luck, my member WILL Not listen.
patrick December 02, 2012 at 01:13 AM
If I see things in a different way ie mini warehouses off clairmont on land that TAX money was use to buy, clear And promise No new buildings would be built, But " my research says that they can" that statement Was ok by the new member anThose of us in the community are against Cosco selling ga" stated by the new member also vp of Ashford Park group,I live I Ashford Park Percent in July 2012 I do not remember the new member WAS in office and a few of us in the community were for itCounty Dist.2 member with the support of Dist.6 spoke and VOTED NOT to allow the member that Was ELECTED FROM THE AREA FROM VOTING,THREE VOICES AGAINST THE the will of the people. EDDIE do not forget to vote for SAXby in 2014. The Mayor Can speak for those of us that will not have a voice.
patrick December 02, 2012 at 01:17 AM
Eddie the law for those who drive is one not being on a cell phone and just as important the driver MUST have eyes open, then you can see the signs that were not token down and those on land without ok

Eddie, I replied two days ago, did you check? There is one right on the corner of Duncan and Duke. I told Sandy about them today and she said " We don't have any signs on poles".
Eddie E. December 02, 2012 at 05:11 PM
Kathie, I believe the only sign at the corner of Duncan and Duke is with the complete authority and at the request of the property owner on a sign stake. There is nothing on any telephone pole. So I guess you fail again.

Eddie, I have pictures... one taken every day for the last week and emailed to the County code enforcement office, along with the pictures from Tryon and Cravenridge. It's still there this morning. It is NOT in the yard, it is a flyer in a plastic sleeve stapled to a public phone pole and I'm not the only one who has reported it. I don't really care if you believe me or not.
"E Pluribus Unum" December 02, 2012 at 07:36 PM
"a flyer in a plastic sleeve stapled to a public phone pole?" Hahaha. That's really funny. I bet there's been a "missing cat or dog" plastic sleeve stapled to that same public (not away of any private phone poles) phone pole sometime in the past. I do hope someone (like KSOCC) called the telephone number listed so the cat or dog owner could shamefully remove that plastic sleeve stapled from that same public phone pole. Is this much attention also directed to the Neighboorhood Watch?
Eddie E. December 02, 2012 at 09:43 PM
Kathie, I had to walk my dog to get close enough to the power poles to see what you were whining about. Apparently, some over-zealous supporters have stapled a couple of mail pieces to the poles to share their joy at knowing there is an alternative on to jmaxjr. on the ballot! Sometimes it's hard to contain over-zealous supporters, heck you should have seen the carnival that had been on the corner of Caldwell and Tryon on election day! Is taking pictures of such a thing really the best thing you have to do with your time?
Eddie E. December 02, 2012 at 11:07 PM
patrick, I really wish I could understand whatever it is you are trying to say.
Eddie E. December 02, 2012 at 11:08 PM
I'm glad that Sandy didn't take any money from potential vendors, or have a highly 'checkered' past, or have a copy of the 'budget' that she didn't want to share with the others. Geez, the things that some people can ignore while at the same time getting bowed up about silliness.

Representing them in a shameful, unabashedly, fashion such as treating community members as if they need parental oversight! Which we certainly do NOT!

Much conjecture, conspiracy building thou doth continue... Unison!
Prissy Mae Millendorf, Brookhaven Socialite December 03, 2012 at 01:32 AM
LOL... As if you or Ms. Murray haven't done the very thing you accuse others of doing! So tell us Martha, how many times have you defended J. Max against the onslaught of lies, mistruths and hateful speech he has received.... including that inaccurately stated by the very Ms. Murray? Right, Mr. Timothy?
Prissy Mae Millendorf, Brookhaven Socialite December 03, 2012 at 01:37 AM
Kathie... Sometimes a man is less a man when he can't face the truth, covers it up, & then attacks the character of another person to demean them. It is what it is! Congrats to Kathie for taking on a big*t!
Kathie " SOC" Coy December 03, 2012 at 01:10 PM
Gosh Eddie, a simple " I'm sorry, I was mistaken" would have been fine. I will again remind you the corner Caldwell and Cynthia is PRIVATE property and the pole is NOT. I have no issue with any Sandy signs being placed on private property.
Kathie " SOC" Coy December 03, 2012 at 01:15 PM
EPUJAY, Nope didn't report the lost " Bailey" sign, I'm not holding the residents of the neighborhood to the same standards that I hold someone who is running for Mayor to.
Kathie " SOC" Coy December 03, 2012 at 01:38 PM
Eddie I almost stopped yesterday to point it out when you and Jay were standing out there a few feet away from it yucking it up but I thought better of it, I did show it to Sandy after she finished talking to you on Saturday... she still didn't remove it.
"E Pluribus Unum" December 03, 2012 at 02:18 PM
KSOCC, well I must say I respect your honesty about holding a double standard. Now, even though double standards become effective tools to justify irrational , sometimes inappropriate actions, and a lost sense of reality IMHO, but it's refreshing for someone to admit it. So I gather once the reality of big bold promises not being delivered by the new city Brookhaven, you will be up in arms with our new city leadership regardless of you wins tomorrow? If not, what possible new double standard could you conceive?
patrick December 03, 2012 at 07:50 PM
Eddie, Sandy may not have taken money,All she had to do was Lie about how Davis Jr. Did not pay tax that His father{who passed away in 2002} did not pay 1n 2007,2008,2009.I know THIS fact means zero to you,so please claim that you do not understand this FACT. Ps did other that ran {I am sorry to say won}take money or time from those with a eye on city money.
patrick December 03, 2012 at 07:51 PM
You are right.
