Brookhaven Residents Complain Of Solicitations, Threats From Sanitation Workers

The complaints come from the city's Murphey Candler community, and some residents are fearful of retaliation.

Several Murphey Candler residents are complaining that county sanitation workers solicited tips from them, and threatened to return to their homes if the homeowners didn't pony up.

CBS Atlanta reported late Tuesday evening that some DeKalb Sanitation workers allegedly approached the Brookhaven homes, asking residents for gift cards or tips as holiday gifts.

One resident told the station that a worker said, "I think you guys missed me on Christmas."

"I told him, my wife takes care of that, and then he more or less said, ‘We'll be back next week. Put the donation underneath the mat or we will pick it up,'" the homeowner told the station.

Another resident complained that two workers who collect her recyclables also asked for money.

DeKalb spokesman Burke Brennan said the county is aware of the complaints, and that one employee has been assigned to another route while the investigation continues.

The station quoted Brennan as saying, "If the allegations prove true, we will take immediate corrective personnel action."

Don't know what people are calling threats but cash in hand tips instead of county fines/fees is nothing new.

Why are the folks of Murphy-Candler always the victims? The epicenter of the city movement claiming lack of police & park services - think I may have heard the new rallying cry - "Brookhaven Sanitation". Get your local resident Mike Jacobs to fix it for you. As a resident of the real Brookhaven, I foolishly feel that DeKalb Sanitation is great, efficient & friendly. I got my trash out late yesterday and one guy walked half a block to pick it up - and what do I tip them? I wave hello when I see them.

DeKalb Sanitation does a great job but this team was aggressively asking for 'tips.' This includes chasing a woman and her child up their driveway and then not leaving, going into garages to help remove 'recyclables', suggesting to leave a 'tip' under the door mat and they would come and pick it up, asking for tips to remove yard waste, etc. This has been going on for a least a month if not longer and as friendly as they are, there is a veiled threat that needed to be addressed.

Freddie--"As a resident of the real Brookhaven" are you saying you are in "Historic Brookhaven" and subscribe to the "Let them eat cake" position? Another "conspiracy" that Murphey Candler residents are lying? We personally have never had a problem with Dekalb Sanitation. I try to offer them ice cold water on hot days in the summer if I am around when they are coming down my street and they have always been great on pickups.

"Another "conspiracy" that Murphey Candler residents are lying? We personally have never had a problem with Dekalb Sanitation."---Filemon Hardly the "conspiracy" of Brookhaven's cityhooding and the ongoing problem of its resulting city.

don G. Everything wrong in the world is really because of the Mexican Government. If only more people knew. Keep up on the good work on this, DG.

"Everything wrong in the world is really because of the Mexican Government."---Filemon "The world"? Obviously he MxGov hasn't gotten that far yet. While just as obvious, the US, is far enough. Tell us Filemon, will you ever not defend the MxGov? The MxGov in the US? Including Brookhaven?
