Davis: Committed to Keeping Millage Rate Below the Cap

A series of robocalls hit the city again late Monday afternoon, with claims that Brookhaven's mayor wants to raise taxes.

Yet another round of robocalls hit Brookhaven late Monday afternoon that claimed Mayor J. Max Davis has plans to raise taxes by raising the city's millage rate.

But in an interview with Patch Tuesday morning, Davis said he remains committed to keeping the city's millage rate below the cap of 3.35 mills.

"All of our city leaders have been in Savannah for a conference," Davis said, "so it's strange that these anonymous sources chose to wait until everyone is out of town so they could make these false and unfounded statements.

"I don't know what their purpose or goal is, and all they're doing is scaring and confusing a lot of people, many of whom are older.

"My goal remains the same: for Brookhaven taxpayers to pay equal or less than their previous tax rate while receiving better quality city services."

Back in early March, as the city was preparing to adopt a budget, another round of robocalls claimed Davis was planning to increase property taxes and also increase taxes on electricity and land line phone services.

"Nothing has changed from our cityhood referendum," Davis said. "We're not doing anything difference than what we committed to do."
