City Hopes to Bring Development to Buford Highway

Brookhaven hires firm to lead Buford Highway Improvement Plan.

From the City of Brookhaven:

Brookhaven is working to improve the Buford Highway corridor to increase economic development and jobs in the city’s south end.

This week, the city officially hired Jaeger Co., a Gainesville-based design and planning firm, to lead the Buford Highway Improvement Plan following a RFP process.

The plan will look at the current development in the area, redevelopment opportunities, safe housing initiatives and diverse workforce programs. It will also focus on pedestrian accessibility and streetscape initiatives.

The final product will include an action plan to stimulate the area to its full potential as the gateway to Brookhaven.

“This will be a mini comprehensive plan that focuses on improvements in the area,” City Manager Marie L. Garrett said. “Buford Highway is prime redevelopment location because of its access to Interstate 85, beautiful skyline views of downtown Atlanta and diverse employment base.”

Jaegar will work with a steering committee of Brookhaven residents, business owners and landlords. In addition, the public will have an opportunity to provide feedback at hearings in the spring.

The plan will be presented to the Brookhaven City Council for approval in the late spring.

The city selected Jaegar after interviewing three of the nine firms that submitted bids.

The final Buford Highway Improvement Plan will supplement the Brookhaven Comprehensive Plan, which the city plans to launch in late December. The city is currently reviewing bids for a consultant to lead the comprehensive plan, which will be a year-long study that looks at future growth and redevelopment for the entire city.

This is Brookhaven’s latest effort to improve the Buford Highway corridor. Earlier this year, the city launched a multifamily inspection program that includes inspecting the exterior of all apartment complexes to ensure compliance with international property maintenance codes. The city is also working with the state to expand sidewalks, pedestrian crossings and street lighting along Buford Highway.
