Burrell Ellis: Jobs Act Will Move our Nation in the Right Direction

DeKalb County is committed to supporting the President as he unveils his national jobs initiative and hope to be an active local partner, said Ellis.

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis released this statement following Presdient Obama’s speech on jobs Thursday night.

“I want to commend President Barack Obama for having the vision and leadership to propose a timely and urgent plan to ‘put more people back to work’ through passage of the American Jobs Act.  During this economic crisis, it is critical for federal, state, and local elected officials to identify innovative and cost effective strategies to foster an environment conducive for economic growth, small business development, protecting homeowners, and recommitting resources to our production sector.  The American Jobs Act will move our nation in the right direction, but it cannot get our country where it needs to be alone.  As the President so poignantly stated, ‘all of us will have to up our game.  All of us will have to change the way we do business.’

In DeKalb County, we have upped our game through various initiatives and programs that will strengthen our local economy by putting people back to work and keeping families in their homes.  Through our One DeKalb Works initiative, we intend to partner with leading non-profit organizations and academic institutions to create employment opportunities for DeKalb citizens from the $1.3 billion watershed capital improvement project the county will soon undertake.  Our One DeKalb Lives initiative will combine various programs to provide financing for first time homeowners and refinancing assistance for homeowners facing foreclosure.
