Brookhaven Mayoral Candidate Recommends Commission Members

Sandy Murray has recommended candidates for the long-awaited Brookhaven commission.

Brookhaven mayoral candidate announced Monday afternoon that she has recommended three candidates to serve on the .

Murray recommended to Gov. Deal the candidacies of:

  • Jana Leigh Thomas, a public administration specialist who previously worked with PeachCare for Kids;
  • Michael Elliot, acurrent board member of the Historic Brookhaven Neighborhood Association; and
  • Richard Lyon, chair of the transportation committee for the Ashford Alliance Community Association.

Deal has until Sept. 1 to announce the five-member commission, which will make hiring recommendations for city attorney, city manager, city clerk, and city accountant. The commission will report its findings to the mayor and city council once they are elected.

The commission will further issue recommendations for Brookhaven services that might be best privatized, following the best practices of other municipalities.

Murray stressed the qualifications of her recommendations and highlighted their contributions to the burgeoning city of Brookhaven.

“I am proud to call Jana Thomas, Mike Elliot and Dick Lyon good friends who also care tremendously about Brookhaven. I recommend them as experts on government, zoning and development, and transportation. I know their contributions will help our city during its important transition.”

Murray added, “These candidates reflect a broad cross-section of the Brookhaven community. I have selected both proponents and opponents of the new city formation. We must bring Brookhaven back together after a divisive election.”

Mike Elliot is a very good candidate to start off with very intelligent pick Mike knows zoning and best use very well and would be one of the best assetts to the start up

I second that about Mike. He's been instrumental in the LCI overlay and has worked diligently to help shape Brookhaven into a live/walk/work/play city.

Do these people currently have day jobs? It would be interesting to know where their tangible experience comes from. A few questions on each candidate Mrs. Thomas - 1) In what capacity did she serve while with PeachCare, what time frame, and where is she currently employed? 2) Where she develop and apply the skills that make her a "public administration specialist"? 3) Level of education and degree? 4) What are her primary motivations for pursuing office? Mr. Elliot 1) Where is he currently employed and what is his area of focus? 2) It appears that he understands zoning and best use... is this Dr. Elliot of The Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development at Georgia Tech? If not where is/was Mr. Elliot employed and what was his title? 3) Mr. Elliot's level of education and degree? 4) What are his primary motivations for pursuing office? Mr Lyon - Apply the same questions posed for the first two candidates. Offering that he is a good candidate based on his experience as "chair of the transportation committee for the Ashford Alliance Community" isn't very compelling.

Aren't you also a candidate (although hiding behind an anonymous moniker)?
HamBurger August 28, 2012 at 12:42 PM
GuruRussell, reasonable questions you are asking. However, it is interesting that they are being asked by someone that never answers specific questions about C$ND. Please pass the yellow mustard!

Hamburger. I'm not a candidate and I'm not affiliated with C4ND and never was. There is your answer. Do you cook hamburgers for a living? I assume that you and Eddie Ehlert have similar questions for the candidates?
HamBurger August 28, 2012 at 01:08 PM
GuruRussell, well . . . There was an email floating around Drew Valley with some very specific details. So, you are telling me not to look behind the curtain? Special hamburger and a Cheerwine?

I have questions for the candidates. Of course, I am more concerned about protection of tree canopy, stream quality and real livability.

I was the Director of PeachCare for Kids when the program was in development (1998) through its first 6 years. I have a Master's Degree in Public Administration and Policy and have worked for a state Senate, state agencies and a city manager. I am currently a Senior Vice President and director of Health and Social Marketing, a field dedicated to having an impact on issues that affect people's lives and health, at Porter Novelli. I have been on the board of the Georgia Budget and Policy Institute for the past four years and am a graduate of Leadership Atlanta (2011) and Leadership DeKalb (2007), organizations dedicated to educating residents about a diversity of issues that impact our communities. My primary motivation is my love for the neighborhood of Brookhaven. The home I live in has been in my husband's family since it was originally built in 1942. I work less than 3 miles from my home and have two boys in preschool at Peachtree Road Lutheran. Brookhaven is where we actively live, work and play.

I have had an occasion to work with Jana Leigh Thomas in the past and can attest to her capability. She is very capable. Now...Alledgedly GLD?, are you asking the same questions to others being considered or are you just axe grinding? BTW, do you know if the other mayorial candidates have publically announced recommendations to the commision in the same manner as Ms. Murray? I haven't seen anything. Did I miss seeing it? If not, I think you need to pester the other candidates to follow Ms. Murray's lead.

Mr. EPU, there you go again . . . Expecting certain candidates to be transparent . . . Special hamburger?
Jack of Kings August 28, 2012 at 10:38 PM
Mr. Transparency. PLEASE ANSWER THE QUESTION, HamBurger--Are you running for a CIty of Brookhaven Office or not? Simple question. SImple Answer. Just say "No, I am not running for office in the Ciity of Brookhaven" and be done with it.

Isn't it a little late to be recommending folks? The deadline is by Sept 1, this Saturday, and I would think the Gov's office would have run background checks and started contacting the potential candidates by now.
Brookhaven Maven August 28, 2012 at 10:54 PM
Ms. Jana @ 4:16p - WHY aren't you running for mayor??? You'd be a shoo-in!
Eddie E. August 29, 2012 at 03:20 AM
Why would the yessers want to soil their hands? After all, we have our instructions!
Eddie E. August 29, 2012 at 03:20 AM
Yes, they have.
Eric H August 29, 2012 at 05:07 PM
BM now that you mention it... Yes very compelling credentials.
Eric H August 29, 2012 at 05:11 PM
That's what I would assume Eddie. Which makes this seem kind of a management ... well anyway.
