Two Debates Set For Brookhaven Candidates

One debate will involve the District 2 candidates and the other will focus on mayoral candidates.

The Ashford Park Civic Association and the Drew Valley Civic Association have teamed up to present two debates featuring Brookhaven city candidates.

On Sept. 27, the candidates for City Council District 2--Jim Eyre, Larry Hurst and Russ Mitchell--will be at from 7 to 9 p.m. Scott Holcomb, District 82 state representative, will moderate.

Oct. 3 will see the mayoral candidates--Larry Danese, J.Max Davis, Sandy Murray and Thom Shepard--debating, also at Ashford Park Elementary, also from 7 to 9 p.m. Tom Hogan of the Chamblee City Council will moderate.

"We chose respected local politicians to moderate, as their expertise will be prove invaluable to those of us who have never had a Councilman or Mayor," Erica Mymudes, APCA treasurer, said. "Neither moderator has a vote in the City or District, so we feel confident that the evening will be on a level playing field."

I will finish for the evening with a anecdote about a recent experience with Jim. My partner was was walking our dogs (on leash) down North Thompson. We done this without incident for many years. On this day, an unleash pit bull with no tags or collar rapidly and aggressively approach our female rottie-mix. My partner used vocal commands to control our dogs, and the owner of the dog came to retrieve it. He was a contractor pouring a foundation. He placed his dog into the cab of his truck after putting a collar on it. He did I not acknowledge my partner or apologize. My partner was already upset by the event and demanded that the dog owner speak with him. Instead, the dog owner threatened him with a hammer if he didn't move on. I was on the phone with him and told him to call the police. The police arrived and instead of ensuring the safety of our community by at least ordering the removal of they, they actually threatened to arrest my partner. I was stunned to hear this happening. The police report does not accurately reflect what happened. At any rate, I sent a message to the Ashford Park yahoo group alerting neighbors to this situation. Jim Eyre replied to me by asking what I felt the police should have done differently. I threw it back to him, as candidate for elected office, how did he think the police should have behaved. He never gave a response. Jim gladly presides over ever association and committee he can find - so long as it suits him. But I will never trust him.

Mr. Ron, you just need to vote your conscience, I certainly am! However, in the event you are not aware from my previous posts, let me give you a refresher: As a district #1 resident, I am going to be voting for J., Max Davis and Rebecca Chase Williams. These two candidates are representative of the heart and soul of C$ND, Brookhaven Yes and that slim margin of voters that want a new city. And, they have no clue what they are doing. I am voting to give this new city the leadership it deserves. Man! May I have another special hamburger?
Ron_99 September 29, 2012 at 12:59 AM
Then Hamburger you are just a message board troll with no serious our useful function. Voting for people you sincerely believe will fail is utterly self-defeating. How could you possibly respect yourself?
HamBurger September 29, 2012 at 01:14 AM
Mr. Ron, I have no choice. These two candidates will carry district #1 regardless of what I do. I might as well join the crowd as there is no other definitive choice, regardless of my personal insight. And, I treasure my right to vote too much to not vote. Clearly you do not realize that you have more choices in your district than I do in mine. I understand how you may have misinterpreted my comments, but you just do not understand the politics in district #1. No offence meant or taken. As for you, no one can fault you for voting your conscious . . . Here, would you like a Cheerwine with that special hamburger?
Eddie E. September 29, 2012 at 01:46 AM
Phil, Why do you wear sunglasses inside a building after dark?
Eddie E. September 29, 2012 at 01:48 AM
You really think we will be electing people ready to handle each and every situation that arises? In a new tiny little city? You definitely suffer from delusions.
Eddie E. September 29, 2012 at 01:48 AM
What about Lithia Springs? The future of brokehaven.
Jack of Kings September 29, 2012 at 02:04 PM
It is pretty amusing how some people think that the city--with 5 services-- is somehow going to be LESS efficient and responsive than the county. Yes, there will be a learning curve--but the County is STILL on a learning curve!
Son of Emmie September 29, 2012 at 02:13 PM
People trust people they know and this incorporation effort happened so quickly that many folks are suspicious. When things start to work well in those five service areas, the EddieE, HamBurger-ites of the world will still carp about mistakes and 'shoulda, woulda, coulda's' That the nature of our online Republic.

No Scoot was not pro Brookhaven, He was both anti Brookhaven ,and pro Jim. For he Made sure that The ONE we love you Jim question was field with dirt was the question, For Yes no one from the county government is going to prison, they have been in prison or are in prison,John Evans who once had a say on the area that are city sits, Frank Redding ,Pat {Mr. Dekalb}Jarvis and Sid Dorsey not to speak of the School System,But Scott could bring up the Gwinntt county. In order to make the the I love jim question not as important as it was, ps. those that set up the meeting and Let the first person asking the question More then others, be the that manage the time and not one of the two canidates that the planners control the time
patrick September 29, 2012 at 09:55 PM
Son you are right, the question was only around for !6 Months, the The new library that was for in 2005 has been around for months,But those who were {and still are} ,Are not upset the our " new library.also some people state that the city NEEDS 7--90 members of the police department, Yet the same people say { } about the present set up with Brookhaven sharing 80 members with Emory,Tucker, Northlake, and the rest of North dekalb, that is not in a city.
patrick September 29, 2012 at 10:28 PM
No he will not,But Sandy and Larry may get softball questions as Jim did.
patrick September 29, 2012 at 10:43 PM
Even though Russell was Not given or had questions colored for him as they were for jim, Lets us hope he is elected, since he waited until after the vote on the city, which was known 16 Months Before the vote ,unlike the Chamblee vote 8 months, before he could stand to help our community { community action}.
Booyah September 29, 2012 at 10:53 PM
Our new city needs elected officials who believe in Brookhaven and believe the city will succeed. Both Jimmy and Zanny Murray actively campaigned with their colleague Laurenthia Mesh to stop incorporation. They stood on street corners waving signs saying 'higher taxes' and less protection and debated the issue to prove the city will fail. Why would anyone vote for a candidate who believes the city will fail? Zanny's latest article says the city needs 100 officers but fails to tell us which programs she will cut to pay for these 'yet to proved are needed' officers.

A Resident You are 100 percent right,Let us hope that those vote on Nov. 6, remember what you said,Also there are two people that are running for mayor that not only fought against the vote on July 16 Months after it was brought up, the people you stated fought to keep us from having the right to vote.

Hi Ron, I remember this incident coming across our yahoo group that Jim and I both monitor as APCA Board Members. I'm sorry you felt left hanging, however, I actually wrote on the procedure, having been attacked by a dog, surgery and all. I posted that the proper call should be made to animal control, not the police...it is archived in the forum. When I offered assistance, I was told that the next door neighbor knew the owners and would contact me if a friendly chat didn't work. I got a thank you and heard nothing else. I know that dog attacks are unnerving and I'm sorry that you had additional stress, but please know that we are a neighborhood association, our power is limited. In the future, feel free to contact me as I've come to handle the day to day and Jim is more big picture, zoning, overlay, etc. P.S. there are good and bad police officers everywhere-I feel your pain.
Erica M September 30, 2012 at 01:49 AM
I hope you will come to the Mayoral Debate on Oct 3 and ask that very question about the police.
Ron_99 September 30, 2012 at 03:52 AM
Erica - what the heck are you talking about? You had NO response and NO involvement with the incident I describe. So you archived some "procedure" on your message board and that makes it all OK? What? You post is utterly disconnected from the incident. My point is simple - Jim failed to respond to the very question he asked me. Complete silence. So he gets to ask questions but feels no obligation to answer the same questions? Erica, your allegiance to Jim is OK by me - but don't cloud the issue with your unrelated tale.
Ron_99 September 30, 2012 at 03:55 AM
Eddie E - a candidate should be able to answer a basic question about expectations regarding police protection - especially when a cornerstone of their campaign is improved police protection. How can they promise improvement if they can't even set he bar?
Ron_99 September 30, 2012 at 04:02 AM
RogerThat - we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one. But that's not the point of the post - I was illustrating just one instance where Jim engaged in a conversation then went silent went asked a question - the very same question he had raised. Jim has some skills when it comes to dominating a group setting, but he seems to have this sense of entitlement and an attitude of condescension that does not lend itself to situations where he (or one of his affiliates) has control. Don't lose sight of the issue here - it's not the incident; it's his attitude towards it.
Erica M September 30, 2012 at 05:25 AM
Ron, I was responding to you out of concern, as part of the APCA, not politically. People pass judgment far too quickly these days and its saddens me, so I speak up. They think nothing of disparaging someone's character in a public forum, so I speak up. I DID get involved with an aggressive dog incident where the contractor came towards the resident with a hammer. Having lived here 15 yrs, I assure you that it's only happened once. That you've now called me a liar..... Regardless, you are my neighbor and if I can use the contacts we've made to make you feel safe, you know how to find me - I am front and center. If you don't get an immediate response, please write again.
Steve Walker September 30, 2012 at 11:52 PM
After reading through all of these comments (so far) it appears the debate went just as I had surmised. Easy questions for Jim Eyre. understandably so since it is his neighborhood of residency and he is the APCA . Vice President. As well as being co-sponsored by Vic Herec and DVCA folks who were co-conspirators against City hood efforts with the No City group. Both Civic Assoc groups sponsoring the debates were No City supporters and Mr Eyre was a monetary contributor to the No City Group......

Steve, Why dont you get a job and stop collecting government aide. Get a job sir. Tomorrow is a weekday called Monday. You'll feel better about yourself if you get out of that easy chair.
HamBurger October 01, 2012 at 12:23 AM
Mr. Steve, from what I have heard, regardless of the question asked all candidates had an opportunity and ample time to respond regardless of who the question was posed to. I understand your position, but sounds like you just may have missed an opportunity to confirm your suspicions. Relying on a forum with very little traffic to base your opinion on is laziness on your part. Especially seeing how this affects your district. But that is OK; your mind is already made up. Right? Special hamburger?
Grieg Ericsson October 01, 2012 at 12:43 AM
Steve, Phil wants to know if you have any tight white shorts.
Jack of Kings October 01, 2012 at 01:16 AM
Grieg...always good to see that you have nothing else to do in your life than post on Patch. Could you do all of us here a favor and put a STAR in the beginning of your posts when it contains something worth reading? That would help tremendously. BTW, have you heard that there have been reasons of concern that activists in the NOCITY movement who are running for public office really intend to be obstructionist to assist in fulfilling their oft-cited prediction that the City cannot succeed? That they will be disruptive in council meetings? ...me neither.
Grieg Ericsson October 01, 2012 at 01:35 AM
Wow Phil, In all seriousness, this could be something only J Max would dream up to garner support so he can pay back all those "deals" he made in return for a yes vote. Ala Pat Hoban. Just sayin'. I was at a meeting yesterday where J Max was there and he said he was against cityhood until Dunwoody said no to annexation. Not my words. His.
Jack of Kings October 01, 2012 at 01:40 AM
Grieg-- in all seriousness? LOL. You have not had ONE serious post since you arrived here. And what was the meeting you were at yesterday where J.Max said what you said? What meeting? Thanks for realizing that your words hold no value here.
Grieg Ericsson October 01, 2012 at 01:43 AM
PS...I wonder if there is going to be a cannonball contest at the Silver Lake festival. I bet I know who will win.....
Grieg Ericsson October 01, 2012 at 01:45 AM
Ok Phil I tried. I wish you had your tight white shorts on at the District 2 meeting last week. They would have matched your red shirt nicely. I could only stay a minute as I wanted to go to the commission meeting but you looked really cute.
