Brookhaven Candidates Attend Training

Here's a list of candidates who attended recent training sessions offered by the Georgia Municipal Association.

Several Brookhaven candidates attended two recent training sessions offered by the Georgia Muncipal Association (GMA).

The sessions covered such topics as the role and duties of the mayor and council; the role of elected officials; budget setting processes; and open meetings requirements.

The GMA is the only state organization that represents municipal governments in Georgia. Based in Atlanta, the GMA is a voluntary, non-profit organization that provides legislative advocacy, educational, employee benefit and technical consulting services to its members.

I got another of those second nasty campaign mailer compete with a new set of misleading innuendo and doctored pictures from Sandy Murray's campaign. One time was bad enough but two times? And her comment about hiring a police chief to make the police decision and criticizing J. Max on that topic when all along he is the one who has said that is laughable. As I recall its Sandra Murray who wrote the Patch article calling for starting with 100 based solely on a national benchmark that doesn't take into account the size of a district or other factors. A standard that most say isn't really something to base a decision. Its easier to hire officers than it is to fire officers, so we should start lower. And add if experience indicates we need more officers.

Give me a break - training sessions?!? I live in Council District 3 and according to the Georgia Government Transparency & Campaign Finance Commission (http://media.ethics.ga.gov) formerly the State Ethics Commission only 4 of the candidates in District 3 have filed the Personal Financial Disclosures which were due back in August. Now, days before the election only Deborah Anthony, Julia Russo, Hope Bawcom & Eric Steavens have filed their required documents. Bates Matthison, Bridget Odonnell, Kein Quirk, Ben Pogdor & Gaye Stathis have not filed Personal Financial Disclosure. Don't I hear almost every candidate spout the term "transparency"? Unfortunately it is used by most only in speeches but not in practice. They should be trained as to what was required months ago in order to be candidates.

To me there is no excuse for missing something this important. If those folks did not file their campaign reports then those candidates must be called out. Where is Sandy Murray on those folks? Forgot, she still has to pay a fine FROM THE LAST RACE SHE WAS IN, RIGHT SANDY? or wrong? What a huge letdown to see such nonsense in races that are just 2 steps ahead of dog catcher.

So two mayoral candidates did not participate in the GMA training sessions--Sandy Murray and Thom Sheperd. Interesting.

AJC article has this statement from Ms. Murray: " Stance on incorporation before vote: Had concerns about the process but is committed to launching the new city." What?????? This is reality http://o2.aolcdn.com/dims-shared/dims3/PATCH/resize/600x450/http://hss-prod.hss.aol.com/hss/storage/patch/b4cfbe3a870da3308714a7b98f3fdfa5
