Brookhaven Allowing More Time for Millage Rate Input

The city council is now set to approve a millage rate on Tuesday, July 9, at 7 pm.

Brookhaven's City Council is allocating more time for public comment before voting on the millage rate.

The council will vote on the millage rate at its regular meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9, at 7 p.m. at Brookhaven Municipal Court.

The council will hold its fourth public hearing Monday, July 8, at 12:30 p.m.

Following the hearing, the council will do a first read on the millage rate at a special called meeting at 1:30 p.m.

The millage rate adoption on Tuesday, July 9, will be the second read, as required by the city charter.

“Residents will have had six opportunities to give us feedback, including four public hearings and public comment sessions at the two council meetings,” said Mayor J. Max Davis.

In a story first reported on Patch, Davis came under fire from an anonymous source in late June, as a series of robocalls were made to Brookhaven residents, claiming the mayor has plans to raise taxes through an increased millage rate.

The city is currently operating at a 3.35 mills tax rate for its interim budget for fiscal year 2013. Brookhaven’s city charter prohibits the council from raising the millage rate above 3.35 mills. Davis told Patch he is committed to keeping the millage rate below the city's cap.
