Are Brookhaven and Golf Carts a Good Fit?

City councilman says local leaders should explore idea of allowing the motorized carts as an accepted mode of transportation in Brookhaven.

Would you like to able to drive a golf cart on residential streets or multi-purpose pathways to get from place to place in Brookhaven?

Last week at a council work session, District 3 City Councilman Bates Mattison introduced the idea of the City allowing the use of golf carts, which would include brakes, hip restraints, a reverse warning device, tail lamps, and could not travel more than 20 miles per hour.

The Brookhaven Post reported that Mayor J. Max Davis has instructed the interim city attorney to bring forth an ordinance concerning the carts at a future date for council discussion.

Just south of Atlanta, Peachtree City officials and residents have long lauded the positives associated with golf cart use as this ”Discover Life at 15 mph” video depicts. Residents there can navigate from neighborhood to shopping centers, schools, and parks through the wooded scenery of 90-miles of multi-use paths that are home to golf carts, pedestrians and cyclists.

In Carlsbad, Calif., the design team at Mercedes Benz has recently announced plans for the "golf cart of the future" (artist rendering pictured), which would have a centrally-located joystick instead of a steering wheel, meaning that riders on both sides can drive the cart.
