A popular DeKalb eatery that had served patrons for three decades was destroyed by flames early Wednesday morning.

The blaze at the Longhorn Steakhouse on North Druid Hills Road in Toco Hill broke out around 1:30 a.m. and took at least 35 firefighters to extinguish the 2-alarm fire.

Witnesses indicated they heard an explosion and saw the roof blow off. DeKalb fire officials believe the fire was sparked in the rear of the building near the kitchen.

There were no injuries reported and the investigation continues.

A spokesperson for Darden Restaurants released a statement Wednesday morning:

"We are extremely thankful no one was inside the restaurant at the time of the fire. We appreciate the efforts of DeKalb County firefighters and are grateful they are all safe. Right now, the well-being of our team members is our number one priority. We are already working to place them at other LongHorn locations, as well as other Darden restaurants, in Atlanta."

We wish Longhorn Toco Hills, its loyal customers and staff all the best. I was just trying to get someone to pony up some money for a good cause for real people, many of whom I know and care about. On a positive note, the ROXX just opened on Northlake Pkwy. in Tucker. Time to migrate to a new watering hole, perhaps?

"...succeed from DeKalb..." That's a good one, Cheryl! Nothing succeeds like success, as the old saying goes. And we all know that you can't secede from DeKalb County anyway... at least not without moving.

Little urban agriculture humor there.
