Patch Poll: A Brookhaven Police Department

Are you satisfied with DeKalb's police, or would you prefer our own local department? Patch wants your opinion.

The issue of police and public safety is one of the central issues of the cityhood debate.

Proponents point to the fact that the Carl Vinson Institute Study says a force ofΒ  53 officers is viable for a city of Brookhaven. They also argue a Brookhaven police force will have more officers on the streets over a smaller area than DeKalb County currently does in our community.

Opponents are skeptical, though. They point to Bureau of Justice Statistics numbers that say the average city of 50,000 has 88 police officers. If Brookhaven goes by this average, an additional 35 police officers would be needed, resulting in more startup costs that cityhood proponents are promising.
