News Nearby: Man Arrested Following Carjacking at Lenox Mall

The suspect produced a handgun before taking the victim's vehicle Saturday afternoon in Buckhead.

Atlanta police arrested a male suspect Saturday afternoon in southwest Atlanta whom they say carjacked a woman earlier in the day in a Lenox Square Mall parking lot.

According to Officer John Chafee, at around 2 p.m., the suspect approached the victim just after she parked her car. The man produced a handgun and ordered her to leave her purse and exit the vehicle. He then sped off in the vehicle and the victim was able to give a description of the suspect and vehicle to authorities.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., officers spotted the vehicle in the 900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and attempted a traffic stop. After a brief pursuit, the suspect exited the vehicle and ran on foot before he was apprehended.

Chafee said police found the victim’s belongings and a small amount of narcotics inside the vehicle and a backpack that the man dropped while attempting to flee on foot. The handgun was also recovered.

The victim was not hurt. The suspect, described as being in his 20s, was not identified by police as authorities are looking to see if he is connected to other crimes in the area. He is facing charges related to the carjacking, narcotics and pursuit.
