Brookhaven Swears in New Police Force

The city's 54-officer department hits the streets July 31.

Brookhaven Mayor J. Max Davis swore in the city's new 54-officer police department Monday morning – about two weeks before the force is finally set to hit the streets.

The officers gathered inside an auditorium at The Marist School before they took their oath.

Deputy Chief Ron Freeman told the officers – many of whom arrived from larger municipal or county police forces – that, in Brookhaven, they'll have the opportunity to solve crimes and work thoroughly without "being a slave to the radio."

"You're gonna have that opportunity here folks," he said.

The department will begin patrols in the city Wednesday, July 31.
