Brookhaven Police to Start Patrols July 31
The department's patrols will start the same days residents voted to create the city last year.
Brookhaven's new police department will begin patrolling city streets July 31, city officials said Tuesday.
The department, which was assembled in just three and a half months, Mayor J. Max Davis said, also debuted one of its new police cruisers in front of the city's municipal court off Buford Highway.
The department has hired 54 officers, including 39 patrol officers and investigators, nine sergeants, three lieutenants and a deputy chief, police Chief Gary Yandura said.
“These officers represent some of the most experienced law enforcement in the state,” Yandura said. “We have assembled a great team and they are excited to begin protecting and serving Brookhaven.”
Officers will work within six patrol zones organized around natural boundaries, streets, traffic accident numbers, calls for services and crime statistics from DeKalb County police, city officials said.
The cars, Ford Interceptors, were chosen for their gas mileage and adaptability for the future since other patrol vehicles are being discontinued, the city said in a statement.
