UPDATED: Details Emerge on Standoff/Suicide at Apartment Complex

SWAT team finds man dead inside apartment after woman reported assault at Conservatory at Druid Hills.

Updated, 5 p.m.: Details have emerged on Friday's standoff at the Conservatory at Druid Hills which ended after an armed unidentified 35-year-old Hispanic man took his own life, according to DeKalb police.

Officers responded to the complex at 3455 N. Druid Hills Road around 9:45 a.m. after a report of a domestic incident, police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said.

When officers arrived, a 34-year-old woman told them she had been physically assaulted by her live-in boyfriend.

Officers then attempted to make contact with the suspect inside the apartment, but were unsuccessful, Parish said. While outside the apartment the officers heard multiple gunshots from inside.

At this point, the officers pulled back and called the SWAT team.  Residents in the immediate vicinity of the apartment were evacuated, Parish said.

Parish said the SWAT team also made numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact the man.

After obtaining a search warrant, SWAT forced their way inside. Parish said they found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot injury.

No officer fired a weapon during this incident, she said. The woman reportedly sustained bruising as a result of the physical altercation with the man. However, she was not transported to a hospital.

No other injuries were reported.

Police were not releasing the man's name pending notification of next of kin, police said.
