Mothers Rock!

Mothers ROCK every day, not just on Mother's Day. So why does your mother rock?

Like millions of mothers, I woke up on Mother’s Day with tingling anticipation.  My girls jumped on top of me in bed (as they do every year), anxious to shower me with attention.  I opened their inexpertly wrapped gifts, and expressed joyful surprise under their gaze.  My joy doubled on purpose upon receiving the drawings and handmade cards they had created in school -they’re still in elementary school- for my special day.

That’s right, I delighted in that moment, making it last.  Some wise mothers have told me to enjoy every minute of my daughters’ early years.  It goes by so fast, it seems.  Mothers rock not only for their wisdom, nurturing and generosity, but also for their ways of feeding their children’s unsuspecting souls the love they crave.

Indeed, my mother rocks when she:

  • Counsels me on raising my own children.
  • Gives me unwelcomed advice.
  • Tells dirty jokes. (Awkward…)
  • Talks at me.
  • Talks to me, woman to woman.
  • Still wants to nurse me when I’m sick.
  • Knows the right thing to say.
  • Encourages my craziest endeavors.
  • Treats me to some shopping.  (Thank God, those days aren’t over.)
  • Takes my side when I am sometimes wrong.

The list is endless really.  I shared it with Mom over the phone on Sunday, after my blissful matinee with my babies.  That beat any gift because we got to savor the common ground of being Mamas who ROCK.

So, why does your Mother rock?
