Chamblee Police Officer's Kidney Donation Starts Transplant Chain

Capt. Mike Beller donated his kidney to a transplant recipient in Wisconsin earlier this month, and it could spark transplants elsewhere.

Chamblee police Capt. Mike Beller, the son of Christian missionaries working in Mexico, wanted to help someone (possibly hundreds of miles away) by donating a kidney. So he did.

His kidney went to a recipient in Wisconsin earlier this month, according to myfoxatlanta.com, and it's an act of giving that could spark any number of kidney donations across the country – part of a transplant chain coordinated by the National Kidney Registry.

From the story:

"There's 90,000 people in this country that need a kidney, and there's thousands of them every year that die without one," Beller said.

The registry matches people who need a kidney and have a willing donor who is not a match for them with someone who is, connecting together a chain of transplants across the country.

Beller decided he wanted to start a chain.
