Rotary Club Cuts $60K Check for Military Health Program

The money was given to Shepherd Center's SHARE Military Initiative in Atlanta.

The Rotary Club of Brookhaven announced Thursday it raised more than $160,000 in cash and in-kind donations at its Third Annual “Service Above Self Golf Invitational” held May 13 at the Cherokee Country Club.

The event has raised more than $425,000 in its first three years with the primary beneficiary being the Shepherd Center’s SHARE Military Initiative. The club gave the program a $60,000 check Wednesday afternoon.

Headline sponsor Magellan Health Services, a specialty health care management company devoted to making health care more affordable during difficult times, led the fundraising efforts for the tournament. Additional major level tournament sponsors included Cunningham Heating and Air Conditioning, Choate Construction, Belk, PNC Wealth Management, Mingledorff’s Distributors/Carrier, Norton Benefit Group and JW Outfitters.

“The Rotary Club of Brookhaven is proud to have partnered with Shepherd Center for such a vital cause,” Rotary Club of Brookhaven President Jonathan Byrd said. “The event was a major success thanks to the efforts of all our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers.”

“We are extremely grateful for the Rotary Club of Brookhaven and its continued support,” Shepherd Center’s Medical Director Dr. Donald P. Leslie said. “Philanthropy plays an integral in role allowing us to deliver the care our soldiers need to transition back to active duty or to civilian life. We wouldn’t be able to treat nearly as many soldiers without donations like this.”

Founded in 2008, the SHARE Military Initiative is a comprehensive rehabilitation program that focuses on assessment and treatment for service members suffering from brain injuries and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder sustained during the Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts.

Next year’s Service Above Self Golf Invitational is scheduled for Monday, May 12, 2014. For more information, visit www.sasinvitational.org.
