A Case for City of Brookhaven License Plates

In the 1980s, when I was a boy, I can remember first seeing license plates with the City of Decatur logo when going to visit my grandparents.   At the time, the logo was relatively new – but, even then, struck me as a symbol of civic pride and the beginnings of an urban renaissance.

Now, in Brookhaven, we have become a city.  We also have an attractive and fitting logo for our new city.  Like Decatur, Brookhaven could also benefit from having a branded license plate available to the residents of our city to place on the front of their cars.

The advantages range from promoting our brand as a city, to demonstrating civic pride, to aiding in neighborhood security and crime prevention.

Granted, proposing this does bring about a few questions.  Who would pay for and manage the production? Would the license plates be distributed through the City of Brookhaven or sold through private retailers? Could production and sales both be handled privately?  How much would the license plates cost to produce – and how would any profits be used?

I did reach out to both the City of Brookhaven and the agency who designed our logo, and did not receive any confirmation whether there were specific plans underway to offer branded license plates to Brookhaven residents.  Perhaps this – a minimal investment that would benefit our city on a wide and long-term scale – is worthy of our consideration.
