Earth Fest 2012

Shallowford Presbyterian Preschool and Kids Go Wild Camp is hosting Earth Fest 2012 on Saturday April 21 from 10 am to 2 pm on the beautiful grounds of Shallowford Presbyterian Church.  Earth Fest is a community wide event for adults and children celebrating sustainable urban living and recycling.

Do you have any old paints cans that you need to dispose of?  Maybe you just finished your taxes and now have documents with sensitive information that you need to shred.  What about that old computer hard drive you have collecting dust in your attic or basement.  Eco-Shred will have a truck on site that for a small fee will shred your documents right in front of you.  They will also dispose of your old computer hard drives.  Georgia First Paint Recycling Company will also be on site to recycle your old latex and oil-based paint cans.  This is a great opportunity to kick-start your spring cleaning and also help the environment at the same time.

In addition to the recycling program Earth Fest will also have several hands on educational areas.  One area will focus on the four Earth elements, sun, soil, water, and air.  In this area kids can dig for worms, see how water and air pressure can be used to shoot homemade rockets hundreds of feet in the air, learn how a potato can power a digital clock, and much more.  A second area will be the fiber arts tent where children and adults can do weaving, felting, block printing, and learn how to dye fabrics using tree bark, flower and plant dyes.  For the gardeners in the community who want to beautify their own gardens next to our interactive children’s garden Barbara Hubbard will be selling her native plants. In the local farm area you can interact with live goats, sample and purchase a variety of cheeses made by Sequatchie Cove Farm, and learn how local farmers sell their meats and cheeses in community markets.  Finally, when you get hungry Everbest Market will be on site providing drinks, sandwiches, and a selection of other yummy food items.
