Is Atlanta A Generous City?

The holiday season is in full swing and Patch's Question of the Week wants to know: is our community a generous one at this time of year?

'Tis the season for holiday parties, gifts for friends and family and jingle bells.

But is it also a season for giving? And if so, is Atlanta a generous city to those less fortunate during the holidays?

The U.S. Marines and Toys for Tots are as certain a holiday fixture throughout  metro Atlanta as the Pink Pig and the Macy's Christmas tree. Hardy souls are being offered the chance to experience a Marine Corps-style workout in exchange for an unwrapped toy on Dec. 15.

A Toys for Tots benefit was held just this week in Virginia Highland and Druid Hills, and a Masonic lodge in Chamblee is offering residents the chance to drop off an unwrapped toy for a needy child for the first time ever.

But it's not just Toys for Tots that reaches out for donations and assistance this time of year. Buckhead Christian Ministries is asking for toys for children, and KIPP STRIVE Academy in southwest Atlanta is collecting pajamas for children in need.

And Thursday, Dec. 6, is Georgia Gives Day, where will be the beneficiary of a single, statewide day of giving.

With all of these worthwhile philanthropic goings on, is Atlanta a generous community? Does the city give enough, too much or not enough to these causes? And does the spirit of giving end on Dec. 26, or does it extend throughout the year for the metropolis once called, 'the city too busy to hate?'
