Chamblee Church Features Stations of the Cross Event

The event runs from March 19-29, 2013.

Chamblee First United Methodist Church is featuring a Stations of the Cross event, an activity enabling participants to retrace the steps of Christ from the Mount of Olives where he prayed to the moment he was placed in the tomb, all through interactive stations.

The event takes place March 19 to March 29.

The Stations of the Cross dates back to the Middle Ages when after years of persecution, Christians were allowed to walk the path of Jesus to Jerusalem. This became a common Holy Week tradition for many Christians of that time. Through the years the pilgrimage evolved to include stops along the way with
devotions recognizing significant moments on the journey of Christ.

Today many churches in the United States and abroad have created a similar experience locally through the Stations of the Cross. A group of members from the church learned of this type of event after attending something similar at Covington United Methodist Church in 2012.

The church's worship committee then took on the project of planning their own Stations of the Cross.

“I had a strong feeling about bringing it back to the church,” said Stations of the Cross Planner Greer Heard. “I felt like it was something we could do and it was such a positive journey that made an impression on all of us who experienced it. I felt that we had the community that would appreciate it.”

Worship Committee Chair Gayle Ehrig and the rest of the committee spent time researching places in Rome and “stations” on the pilgrimage there to ensure that the stations depicted reflect those of the original pilgrimage experience in Rome.

Upon entry each participant will receive a map showing where to find each of the 14 stations in the church and a script to follow. For each stop on this individual journey there will be a scripture, a prayer, a meditation and an action item.
