Brookhaven's Whiz Kid

A weekly feature highlighting the best of Brookhaven's Kids!

  • Mpaza Kapembwa, 18
  • Cross Keys High School, Senior
  • This athlete and star scholar is a standout at Cross Keys High School!

Moving to a new school is daunting when you are in high school, moving to a new country seems unfathomable. But Mpaza Kapembwa, 18, did just that when he moved to Atlanta from Zambia in the 9th grade, having to adjust to not only new friends but an entirely new culture at the same time.

The adjustment may not have been the easy part, but he not only did that he has also exceled both on the field and off, being an integral part of the soccer and football teams, as well as a Coca-Cola Scholar, one of only 250 nation-wide.

This successful Senior started a foundation that ships clothes and sporting supplies to orphanages in Zambia, has been a Gates Millenium semi-finalist, a Dekalb County Youth Commissioner and a finalist for the 4th Congressional District Youth Senate.

Clearly his selflessness, determination, hard work, and his excellent listening and questioning skills have led him to where he is today, and will continue to do so when he starts his next life journey at Williams College - with a full scholarship, of course!
