Brookhaven's Whiz Kid

Highlighting the best of Brookhaven's Kids!

  • Mattie Kossak, 7
  • 2nd Grader, Austin Elementary

Mattie Kossak, age 7, has found a way to not only beat the heat this summer but to win awards while doing so! This young swimmer just completed her second year swimming for the Byrnwyck Dolphins, and is about to begin her second grade year at Austin Elementary in Dunwoody, where her mom is the school librarian.

With just two years under her belt on the swim team it is even more impressive that she won 14 ribbons from the Sandy Springs Swim Association this season, including 5 first places, 3 second places, 3 fourth places and 3 honorable mentions. And if all of this wasn't proof enough that she is clearly a fish in the water, she was the recipient of the Coaches Award on her team last Summer.

Mattie, a Brookhaven resident, enjoys non-aquatic activities as well, and has just mastered riding a bike, loves to read, dance and play with her friends. She is spending this week at Karate Camp, and if her swim team history is any example we are sure she will be working her way up to a black belt in no time!

"I think Mattie is great because she's so observant and makes connections among/between all the things she experiences," said her mom, Janie Kossak. "She's always ready for a new adventure!"
