A field of more than 3,600 registered participants hit the streets of Atlanta’s Town Brookhaven community for the fifth annual Allstate Life Insurance℠ Atlanta 13.1 Marathon® and Hyundai Hope On Wheels 5K events this morning. The 13.1-mile half marathon and 5K started and finished in Town Green, adjacent to the hybrid Publix, and took runners through Brookhaven and Chamblee.
of Marietta, Ga., won first place in the male division with a time of 1:17:39.
The 34-year-old was able to capture his first title in the event after
competing in it a year ago. Jonathan Koch, of Atlanta, Ga., took
second place with a time of 1:18:59, while Paul
Duckett from Dallas, Texas, earned third place with a time of 1:19:31.
“The weather was perfect, the course
was tough and the race was extremely well organized,” Cawood said. “Being in my
mid-thirties now, training and nutrition is extremely important. I owe my wife,

On the women’s side, Bridget Lyons, 25, of Augusta, Ga., claimed
first place with a time of 1:22:16. Placing
second was Lauren Blankenship from Smyrna,
Ga., with a time of 1:26:26, and Erika
Shaughnessy of Douglasville, Ga., took third with a time of 1:26:50.
Hope On Wheels 5K was won by 38-year-old Jason
Smucker of Marietta, Ga., with a time of 0:25:37. Taking the female crown
was 33-year-old Mary Hogenmuller of
Atlanta, Ga., with a winning time of 0:27:27.
the race, Hyundai Hope On Wheels presented two grants to the Aflac Cancer and
Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) totaling
$325,000. CHOA also received a portion of the race proceeds from the 5K event.
The final amount donated was announced following the race with a check ceremony
presentation to the representatives of CHOA. Additionally, there was a
handprint ceremony that allowed patients battling cancer to dip their hands in
colorful paint and place their handprints on a white 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe
Sport – the official vehicle of Hope On Wheels.
