Will the real fiscally conservative candidate please stand up?

As I visit with voters at their door, at meetings or in forums I find that most people in Brookhaven consider themselves to be fiscally conservative. I have always had this brand of fiscal responsibility as part of my philosophy but what does it actually mean?

My take on this way of thinking means three things;

-A belief that government should never spend more than it has.

-A belief that the money the government does take in should be spent with an  eye towards efficiency and true accountability - not to grow more government.

-A belief that the people know better how to spend their own money better than  government can.

I believe Brookhaven will be best served now and in the future by electing candidates for public office who understand and embrace this philosophy. The problem is some candidates running for Mayor and City Council claim this mantle because they know most voters won't support someone who says "I prefer the DeKalb County model for budgeting, finance and taxation." Yet the DeKalb model is what some of these candidates were actively supporting and promoting just a few weeks ago. They preferred the status quo and did not want Brookhaven to form, much less adopt a new and better way of operating.

During the campaign for city hood and now for Brookhaven’s first Mayor, I have met and spoken with thousands of voters. Of course some of these voters did not favor incorporation.  However, what I am finding is that most voters previously opposed to incorporation do not hold the same views as many of the former activists (now candidates) of the no city political machine. Sandy Murray, in particular, was paid money by No City Brookhaven and, as part of her job, argued that DeKalb county governance was good enough. In contrast, very few voters tell me their opposition was based on a satisfaction with the DeKalb County model of governance.

One of the real differences between how I want to see Brookhaven operate and how DeKalb County functions is how we will be providing services to our taxpayers, both homeowners and businesses. The open and transparent bidding process that is being organized by the Governor’s Commission and will hopefully be adopted by the new City Council, will keep costs to the taxpayers down and increase the quality of services we will all receive.

Many voters main concerns about incorporation were that there wouldn’t be enough revenue to run a city or that city government would be another layer of bad government. Addressing these concerns and building a solid foundation for our city is why I am running to be Brookhaven's first Mayor.

As your Mayor, I will address those concerns by ensuring that we have a small, lean, government which takes less of your hard earned money and spends your tax dollars with prudence and restraint. This is what I believe, and for what I will always stand. Please take a careful look before you vote on November 6th. We are all now one Brookhaven and we need to get this city started right. If you want Brookhaven built with fiscal responsibility and efficiency, then please support me and other candidates who truly believe that it is government's job to serve the taxpayer, not vice versa.

Sometimes you can determine what candidate to vote for by how unfounded the charges are from those opposed to that candidate.

There are opinions and there are facts--and there are those with opinions that believe that repeating them and presenting them AS facts make them facts.

Sorry, but Goebbels tried that ruse....and it worked....for awhile.

Thanks for the clarity, JQP.

Mr. Phil, the Nazi’s committed atrocious atrocities all over Europe. On a per capita basis, some groups suffered more than others.

In Greece, there was a mother and her first born in a water tower while the Germans searched the land below for Jews. Fortunately, the baby was quiet, and lived through this tense experience with the mother not having to make . . . a decision, and although the mother lived a full life and has passed, the child lives to this day.

You, with your equating a horrible event that touched the world and comparing it to the formation of a new city in DeKalb County, something with absolutely no connection in time or history to the Nazi atrocities, shows what a truly, self serving, demented individual you are.

Your behavior is reprehensible.

On yesterday's evening news, did you not see J. Max Davis stutter his charge against Murray that the issue of taking campaign contributions from vendors amounted to Murray's "definition of vendors" despite his own unexpected and voluntary annoucemet, according to the Patch (and later his own confirmating post to B'Patch) of his taking campaign contributions from vendors---by his and, in fact, any defiintion--as early as, and at, the first public event of the non-elected commission/interim government?

"Goebbel's"? Just who, among others, have imposed this 'corporatist' govnance if not yourself?

You, sir, are ridiculous. I was not equating Nazi atrocities to the formation of Brookhaven. Absurd. The point is an infamous propagandist had the strategy of repeating lies, over and over, until they became accepted as fact. But they were never facts.

So when a poster says a particular person is a liar and corrupt. And has said it before many times. AND, I might add, you, HamBurger have called people liars and corrupt over and over, I am reminding others that the lies will never become truths.

You have posted over 1500 times on Patch, HamBurger. Caterwauling, bitching, accusing, slandering, lying, ---- as if you are building some reputation of credibility--- all the while turning people off from even visting these boards, let alone contributing to them.

I know a number of people that have said they would post if it wasn't for the Five Stooges who slam even new contributors for their opinon. Basically, visiting here has become a waste of time. And I will not waste their time any longer by responding to your vitriolic drivel.

Mr. Phil, anyone that would dare to mention the city of Brookhaven and Goebbels in the same breath are truly demented. Just WTF are you talking about? Please, forget your inexcusable explanation!

The same points you tried to make with your defamatory and insulting comparison to the Nazi Goebbels could be attributed to C$ND and Brookhaven Yes! And, J. Max Davis! Clearly, you have forgotten the Brookhaven Yes mailers!

There are many propagandists that have regularly and consistently voiced their bastardization of the truth about the Vinson study over and over. The repetition of inaccurate or false information does not make it true!

Amusingly, you deflect your harassment of me, Mr. Hamburger, with words that you are unable to attribute to me. Show, in full context, where I have made untruthful statements, make statements that are inaccurate, or, is that beyond your pay grade?

As far as folks not participating in our government, I do not care who you know, because as far as I am concerned, they probably never participated in our governmental process to begin with based on your participation.

Once again, your behavior is reprehensible.

No. You were equating it with opposition. Just as did Goebbels.

Phil,
My job may not be pretty but the constant business I get from Breton Ct. makes the City of Brookhaven look pretty appealing to me.
I need people to understand that we will be AWARDING one of the Mayoral candidates a position in the City to represent us and speak on our behalf on topics such as quality of life, infrastructure and safety. These people need to AWARD this distinction to the person with the best qualities such as honesty, ethics, trust and experience. Each of these have a varying degree of these qualities. I for one would appreciate the person that is AWARDED the honor on speaking on my behalf would do so without corruption and smarmy tactics. I was behind J Max (no pun intended) until he announced on his own that he took contributions from prospect vendors. I cannot get past this. This is something I would never do as I am a person of solid moral fiber. I would never AWARD someone the right to represent me as thats in on the take. Too bad J Max chose to sell his honor for a few bucks for a political campaign. I am disgusted and disappointed. I wish the best for the people of Brookhaven. His behavior will tag us if we vote for him as people who advocate these actions in our elected officials.

And Phil,
Please limit your flushes and always remember "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down." Do your part to conserve our natural resources.

What distinctive behavior does one expect from anyone with three very young hungry children to feed, cloth, and commute to school? Desperation is as desperation does.
Lots of talk about beliefs, feelings, etc. Where's the beef?

Roger,
I just want you to know, that under no circumstances have I received or would I accept donations in my campaign for a clog free Brookhaven. I have no interest in providing services for the CIty of Brookhaven. There are plenty of folks who keep "business" floating (no pun intended). In all seriousness, Vote NO today on Pay to Play! Sorry J Max. You had my vote.

Good deal Kimberly. I hope he delivers everything you hope for. Did he bother to give you a list of all of the vendors who has contributed to his campaign? Did he bother to tell you how thats actually a good thing for you? If he didn't maybe no one asked the tough questions that cut past his canned BS answers.

Enuff Govt Already

5:15 pm on Friday, October 26, 2012

Do real fiscal conservatives advocate more government just because their current preferred group is out of power? Government, even this local one will only grow and Brookhaven is now just another government to feed! "A belief that government should never spend more than it has". I think it's state law and to prevent deficeit spending the county made budget cuts, service cuts and furloughs. Pushing through the city this year will take money out of the county budget this year and ensure more service cuts and probably some layoffs for folks like the police. "A belief that the money the government does take in should be spent with an eye towards efficiency and true accountability": there are plenty of laws on the books that dictate how govt does business and I just can't bring myself to believe any govt will be efficient. - "not to grow more government", LOL. "A belief that the people know better how to spend their own money better than government can." If people know how to spend their money better then why more govt to spend the people's money? IMHO, less govt and govt that is farther away is alway better. JMD, I would of perferred you on the commission.
