What Should Brookhaven's Tagline Be?
Do you have an idea for a phrase that sums up life in Brookhaven?
Last week at the inaugural meeting of the Brookhaven commission, Commissioner Jed Beardsley proposed an idea for a contest among Brookhaven-area schools to design a potential new logo for the city.
So, Patch wondered what the city's new tagline might be. Many cities also have taglines– a phrase or motto that sums up what life in their city is like or what their city can do.
What do you think Brookhaven's tagline should be? Tell us below in the comments.
Nearly every town, development or brand has a tagline.
Nike urges everyone to "Just Do It."
The motto for the mixed-use development Town Brookhaven is "Shop. Dine. Dwell."
For the Town of Brookhaven in Farmingham, NY, the tagline is "From Sound to Sea...The Place to Be."
Sandy Springs is "Honest. Efficient. Responsive." Dunwoody, sees itself as "smart" and chose "Smart People- Smart City" as its tagline.
So, how do you sum up your community in a short, snappy phrase?

People in Brookhaven who didn't bother turning out to vote against it because they were playing golf, tennis or having lunch at Capital City Club ? Or perhaps their Mercedes had to have the oil changed and their Ferrari needed to be completely detailed before the trip to the lake house on Lake Burton ? What a shame to have to talk to people who live near Murphy Candler...lol.

I'm not sure why certain folks have such a fixation on the PInk Pony - they are a blip revenue wise and property size wise on the greater picture. We have two CID districts - one at the perimeter and one at Lenox park. We also have the numerous offices and hotels along I 85 including but not limited to corporate square.
And we have some live work shop play communities, and frankly if you put some decent highways in along 85 and more signalized cross walks we could call the entire strip of Buford Highway a Live Work Shop Play community.

If you will enter Brookhaven population into Google, you will find an article about Brookhaven that put the population at 40,000 for the census and 49,000 for when the article was written. Using a quick mental calculation and assuming the 49,000 is now 50,000 I believe that 20% is a fair figure. In allocating the four districts they show more than 49,000. Each district has 12,000 plus.

Ben as with the statement of the square miles of the city being 12 and not less, Google or Wikipedia is not a good source. the 40,000 figure is based on census areas that do not cover the entire city.
The 49,000 figure is based on the 2010 census for the voting precincts in the City of Brookhaven. I don't know where the number is but when they drew the new districts based on the 2010 Census numbers they used the 2010 Census population for each voting precinct.
Does anyone know if a listing of every precinct and its population is available on line? We don't have that many precincts so its fairly easy to calculate - though I guess we have some split voting precincts.

Mr. Ben, like Mr. Eric, I question the numbers and the geography in your sources. The new city does not follow established voting precinct or census mapping. Thus, as a citizen on a computer, you almost have to go street by street and make educated guesses as to in undefined areas and populations.
Regardless, my guess is the populations in districts #1 and #3 are close to what they were in 2010 and the populations in districts #2 and #4 may be slightly less. I attribute this to immigrant populations that may have continued to leave the area since 2008.

Yep, that book looks like what I'm talking about - the best branding doesn't come from a silly "tag line." Tag lines are just good for revenue generating clicks on inane internet chat boards. Branding comes from good urban design practices - in other words our Brookhaven will define itself through its Land Use plan and Zoning and Development approvals. In other words actions (what gets approved and built) speak louder than words (silly tag lines). It would be great if we could be a city without drive-throughs and with pedestrian scale retail (ie. good street presence - windows and doors instead of parking spaces).
I like these reviews of the book -:
"It book will be a shock for people who think a brand is a logo or tagline or something you buy from an advertising or public relations agency"
or
"Most importantly, this book details how to avoid wasting money on superficial advertising and promotion campaigns and focus on substance."

Eric,
Brookhaven had an established brand. It was a neighborhood that people desired to live in, if just to throw out a cool, hip name. Location was not too shabby. Unless this city government is run in an amazing way that is also cool and hip, that established branding before the city will be gone forever. This was the major reason for the name of the city to be anything but Brookhaven. It already had a brand and an identity. Now that brand and identity is all but gone.
Those that were wishing and hoping that their inclusion in the city called Brookhaven would somehow increase the value of their property are going to find out how the reverse can happen.
The Historical Brookhaven area will be the only part of the city that retains the true brand of Brookhaven before the city. All other sections have become a part of something that is not special, not unique, just another city.
So for those that really do want their property values to increase, they had better get to work making an exceptionally great city government that makes people want to live in any part of Brookhaven because of that great government. The spreading of the Brookhaven brand across such a large area took away the mystique of calling Brookhaven home.
Don't worry homeowners: DeKalb County will value your property higher than market values. So be sure to show the tax bill to your friends and potential buyers when they ask how much you are listing your house for.
Eric Hovdesven
2:26 pm on Thursday, September 20, 2012
Bill with all due respect what you wrote has nothing to do with the issue at hand. But ok lets explore. In terms of Geographic lines what was your definition of Brookhaven before the city?
And what do you think will happen to the identify of your neighborhood, DECA, once Chamblee takes it over? And what do you think will happen to Chamblee's identity as a city on the right track once it takes over DECA and Century City? Interestingly Chamblee's brand didn't get diluted by annexing the land up to 285 on the eastern border of Brookhaven's District 1. Also Sandy Springs taking over the area covered by the Dunwoody Homeowners Association and considered as being a Dunwoody Neigbhorhood didn't get hurt when Sandy Springs put up their Welcome to Sandy Springs signs at its border with northern border of DeKalb/Dunwoody.
I don't think the neighborhoods along Windsor will suffer, nor will the Historic Brookhaven mansions nor will Dresden Drive suffer from the "dilution of the Brookhaven brand" I mean we aren't talking tulip bulbs here.

Mr. Eric, the area covered by the city limits of Dunwoody closely represents what folks thirty years ago would consider Dunwoody. The one exception is the Murphy Candler area which was orphaned by Dunwoody.

Eric Hovdesven
3:49 pm on Thursday, September 20, 2012
What do you think caused Dunwoody to orphan Murphey Candler 30 years ago? The opening of 285 30 years ago or the drawing of the school district so that Murphey Candler was in the Chamblee High and feeder school District instead of the Dunwoody High and feeder school District (which I believe was also 30 years ago?)
Or maybe it was that Murphey Candler was orphaned by the Annexation by Chamblee of the other side of its historic neighborhood - Gainsborough East - including the neighborhood pool http://gainsboroughpool.com/ that the neighborhood children's swim team swims out of.
Or maybe you can't really be orphaned by something you were never a part of or ever really wanted to be a part of?

Historic Brookhaven was by estimation, north and east to Johnson Ferry Rd, Peachtree Rd west to Dresden and down to Thompson. IMHO the north and northeast borders were the most defined. Ashofrd Park, up for debate along with the southern border; is it Thompson or Drew Valley? I've always considered Lenox Park (the old Standard Club) and Pine Hills more of Buckhead. Buford Hwy was always its own entity. But it really does not matter anymore, we are going to force assimilation. Chamblee has a great logo to go with their history but the indicators I've looked at say they're on the wrong track. Dunwoody/SandySprings, I remember a little moaning and gnashing of teeth when one of the first things the new city of Sandy Springs did was remove the Dunwoody signs from the top of the street signs. Why does the area need to search for a tag line? Is something missing from the formula for this new city?

I've been in Murphey Candler for 17 years and while some people may have said it was Dunwoody most didn't.
And according to our polling effort to not far after the Dunwoody incorporation, the area was divided fairly evenly between a desire to stay unincorporated, to be annexed by Dunwoody or to be annexed by Chamblee. Though from the election results it looks like the 1/3 Dunwoody folks and the 1/3 Chamblee folks agreed on Brookhaven. Granted jump over to the Fulton side of Ashford Dunwoody and I suspect the identification with Dunwoody grows. Though as big an influence as geography is, having kids in the public school system also shifts things, I mean several seasons watching Chamblee Football or Basketball, Chamblee becomes more identifiable than the farm house in Dunwoody Village.

You may have missed the memo.
Your 'neighbors' did not sign a 'Borg Contract' and we have not "assimilated".
Why on earth did anyone think that a small majority in a specifically placed election would somehow eliminate dissent?
Why would anyone think that the 'leaders' who have spent the last 4 years deriding 'hope and change' would suddenly be able to flip the coin when it was their 'hope and change' at stake?
Do you get out among people very often?

Ashford Observer--HamBurger is running for a Council seat. And the funny thing is that he bitches about transparency --but he is posting anonymously and running for public office. He refuses to deny that he is running for public office, despite reapeated requests to just say he is NOT running.
He refuses to say he is not running. His fear is that it will come out before the election that he has been underhanded by posting her when other candidates have been forthright by posting under their real names.
Maybe it is because HamBurger is involved in real estate development.

Personally, I think I would just make sure that y’all focus on your new city and make sure the Brookhaven Yes crowd is giving you what you really want. All this Brookhaven Committee business is a continuation of the “show” perpetuated by Rep. Mike Jacobs, C$ND, and Brookhaven Yes courtesy of a flip-flopping Governor. Ultimately, what they want is what you will get. And, without intelligent, reasonable folks elected to office, my candidates, J. Max Davis and Rebecca Chase Williams may cost you a tax raise in three to five years. Or, less services than promised per the Vinson study.
So, you find yourself a HamBurger, what are you doing about the formation of your new city? Or, are you so comfortable that you actually trust the Brookhaven Yes crowd?

I know this happens to cyclists, cars purposely driving to close and almost or sometimes making contact, and its an outrageous practice. If a motor vehicle driver can't share the road with a cyclist and actually actively risks causing them physical harm then I question how they conduct themselves in other aspects of their lives.

All,
I have been tracking a large apelike creature for many many miles. Until last week I thought I had lost the trail. My travels across the plains have led me here to the North Georgia area. The recent floods in the Missouri river have cause many scarcely sighted creatures to be displaced. The current track is eastward toward the coastal plains. AO....I've posted before that your photo image of Alfalfa is interesting in the sense that Alfie in real life had a criminal record and was shot in an act of self defense while posing as a police officer to collect $15 that he thought was owed him. Now you identify yourself as non-white. Another interesting connection to your Alfalfa image. Why? There were many episodes of Our Gang that were racially bigoted and insensitive. This includes: One Wild Ride, Monkey Business, Glorious Fourth, Spook Spoofing, Lodge Night, Tale of a Dog, Your Own Backyard, The Smile Wins, and Free Wheeling segments. So as a non-white, why do you reinforce and advertise bigotry with your Patch photo? Are you angry with yourself?

don Gabacho: Ben Podgor never suggested privitization. You are inventing something. In order to make sure that we get all income it is necessary that we take over the receipt of all funds. Maybe the County will collect the real estate taxes for us. But we should collect all funds ourselves. That does not mean that we have to have different people acting as cashier. One person can collect all funds and much can be collected by electronic means.
You think of mean as a pencil pusher or something like that when you refer to me as an accountant.
Actually the work of a Certified Public Accountant starts when the bookkeeper has completed everything. When the company or organization has already prepared its statement. The Certified Public Accountant audits that, reviews that. He does not need a pen or adding machine to do his/her work. This CPA does many different organizations.

I find it strange that I am attacked as either an Attorney or a Certified Accountant or because I was knighted by the French Government. Each attack is done separately. How about taking them all on together. Does the combination mean anything to you. Do you realize that this is the reason I made myself available. Am not doing anything to get elected.
