Police Searching for Driver in Fatal Clairmont Road Hit and Run

The incident occurred last Friday night near the Jett Lounge.

DeKalb police are searching for the driver of a Honda Accord that was involved in a fatal hit and run last Friday night on Clairmont Road near the Jett Lounge.

Police says Nikki Ogunjemilusi was struck by a car late on the evening of March 8 at the intersection of Clairmont Road and Bragg Street. She was pronounced dead after being transported to Grady Hospital.

A police report of the incident said that, based on eyewitness accounts and evidence found on the scene, Ogunjemilusi was crossing Clairmont when the traffic signal changed from green to yellow. The driver of the Honda then sped up in an attempt to make the light and struck Ogunjemilusi.

The vehicle then continued north on Clairmont, making no attempt to stop.

Fox 5 Atlanta is reporting that a friend, Dolly Ogunsakin, was with Ogunjemilusi at the time of the incident.

"Honestly, I didn't even see [the car]," said Ogunsakin. "One of the people around said it was a sedan."

Ogunjemilusi's funeral will be held this Saturday, March 16.

Are they sure it wasn't a Lexus? What color was the car?

I believe it was earlier reported as possibly being silver. Cannot confirm though

This is a tragedy, but not unexpected for that area of Buford/Clairmont. If it was a Honda, you can just about bet that it was an illegal migrant driving and they will never be caught. If it was a Lexus (the sedans have virtually the same body design), they will be in custody by the weekend!

The state DOT has documented very few pedestrian fatalities in the 3700 block (apprx Dresden Dr) up to the end of Clairmont Rd (@ PIB) so yes I agree this crime is unexpected. I'd like to read some available research before committing to the theory of "illegal migrant driving" and Hondas.

Oh, come on. Illegals practically worship Accords. They soup them up and put stupid spinning rims on them, add spoilers, giant speakers, green paint. They are no better than gang bangers, and they know all the shade tree migrant mechanics that can fix them up without leaving a paper trail.

If she was crossing clairmont and the light was green, then technically the driver was not at fault.

There is little information in the story because they couldn't find an english speaking witness.

To Roger That,
As a Hispanic police officer, who patrols the Brookhaven area, I find your comments offensive and baseless especially if there isn't any facts regarding your ignorant comments..

To Roger that,
Illegals don't commit crimes, people do. Thank god your not an officer because we would be stepping back to the Jim Crow days....

Finding something offensive does not detract from fact. If you think about it, illegals (by definition), statistically commit more crime than "people" (including Hispanics). Enlighten me as exactly how Jim Crow laws have anything to do with an illegal hi-and-run driver? Would you support the deportation of such a person, even if it would break up a family?

This tragedy should be a shout out to the police, not a racial discussion- a girl died. Two families are ruined - one is grieving and another is in hiding. Since we are fortunate enough to have a concerned officer on line, I would love to hear what they are doing about driver safety, yes, driver safety. As Tomathy pointed out above, this horrible accident could have possibly been avoided if the pedestrian had simply chosen to NOT ignore the Don't Walk signal.

People in this area have joked for years saying driving on Buford Hwy is like playing Frogger. Pedestrians everywhere, ignoring don't walk signals, ignoring crosswalks...my friend swerved to miss an illegal crosser and hit another car-the pedestrian went on her merry way. I was out of work for 6 months after being hit by a driver with no idea of road rules and now avoid Buford like the plague. (so this discussion hit a nerve for me on a personal level)

I would like to see a plain clothes officer walking about several intersections in this area, handing out tickets to make the roads safer for ALL of us - drivers and pedestrians. In troubled crosswalk areas, near bars, near Marta, perhaps a sign could be attached to the post stating a huge fine for crossing on green to make people think twice - they do it for littering, why not try to post one to save lives.

Erica, I doubt you will ever see a time when pedestrians are ticketed. PEDS has been very influential in getting Atlanta police to sting drivers for cross walk violations. We all know that in certain parts of the metro area most pedestrian related accidents are due to pedestrian error. Regretfully, you do not have to be trained, tested, and licensed to walk and cross streets. It is all about the driver and DUI’s, as it should be, but pedestrians also have responsibility when walking along and crossing roadways.

I see that a third time will be the charm for you. If you need a bicycle, let me know.

@ Erica, The state has documented very few serious traffic crimes along this stretch of Clairmont Rd; so I conclude the county police have enforced and investigated traffic crimes in this area effectively. The county police currently have a traffic division (the motorcycle cops, DUI unit and traffic death detectives that investigate crime like this) but in a few short months it looks like all that goes away when Brookhaven starts a police department. IMO, stories like this will get more and more common in Brookhaven. And BTW I read an article awhile back about the county police conducting a crosswalk enforcement on several state routes in the county. There's a pedestrian advocacy group in Atl that keeps up with this type of info.

To Roger that:
Do me a favor and show some respect. In the end of the day, a young woman lost her life because person killed her. At this point its under investigation and hopefully this criminal will brought to justice. As for you, I will never be able to change your opinions nor your views. I guess we can be greatful that you are not an officer because you would tarnish it. As a police officer, I respect every one and don't assume if someone committed a crime is legal or illegal. All I can do is judge a person by their character like I can judge you.

"As a police officer, I respect every one and don't assume if someone committed a crime is legal or illegal."

So, you won't do your job? It is your job to assess if someone is committing a crime, you know. And, you are not a judge, you are just sworn to serve the same government arm that judges do (not "the people" like most uninformed... ok, ignorant law enforcement officers are mistakenly led to believe).

Enuff Goverment,
The problem with Buford Hwy is that its not pedestrian friendly. Buford Hwy needs more traffic lights and make it more pedestrian friendly for folks to walk...
